84 6.2L ? about right bank smoke - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

What to look for ? I have a 84 GMC 6.2 L Diesel ,lwb,automatic,with factory duals, 31,000 miles.

And when I initially start it when its cold .I get a large amount of blue smoke out the right bank of motor. It only does this for a short time. I asking if its normal or does this look like possible glow plug weakening. Or am I off base on this.When warm starting meaning no glow plug assistance it does not give any indication of any kind of smoke.

Valve guides or valve stem seals would be my guess. My 305 gas burner does the same thing on the right side

possible air leak, but it is more than likely glow plugs. The white/blue smoke is raw fuel.

I would say that you have a glow plug or two weakening since the smoke goes away after it's warmed up. Like Grape said, blue smoke is from raw fuel.

Like the others have said, it's probably a bad glow plug on the right bank. It's nothing to be too concerned about. A lot of diesels smoke bad on start up.

The easiest way to check for good glow plugs is to remove all the glow plug wires, take a 12 volt test light, clip the alligator clip to the POSITIVE side of the battery, and touch the probe to the end of each glow plug terminal. It should light up if that plug is good, and if it doesn't light up, that plug is bad. Test all 8 plugs, it's not uncommon for more than 1 plug to be burned out at a time.

I will put your guys bright idea to work saterday. And check my glows then.I will keep you posted.

Still in the 20-30 degrees around here {michigan} I keep her pluged in on over nights to .
