Exhaust Exit in front of Axle Questions...
Just what the title says. Getting new exhaust put on my 72' short fleet in a couple weeks. Plan on running 2.5" duals with 40 series flows and full length headers. If anyone has experience with running them in front of the axle and exiting at the sides in front of the tires let me know how it worked out. Pics would also be greatly appreciated so I can have an idea what to expect!

Not the same, but I've got mine running behind the left wheel. 40 series Flowmaster. Another board member thought it was a V8 until I lifted the hood...

i have that setup right now
unless you have a strong engine or low rear gear step the exhaust. I lost a lot of low end power when i redid my exhaust from under the bumper to in front of the rear tires. MY problem is i went from 2.25 to 2.5. There is a considerable loss of back pressure do to the one or two bends vs. four or five, not to mention the reduced length. If I had it to do over I would have went down to 2.25 then to 2.5 after the muffler.

I've considered this, but i've been told exhaust gases are bad about backing up into the cab, makes your exhaust much louder sitting in the truck and exhaust can flow back under your bed causeing it to rust.

what to expect?..... expect to be turning your stereo up a lot louder to hear your music... stick to the smaller pipes to maintain back pressure, especially in a swb truck..

Thanks for the help, opinions, suggestions, and info etc. The reason for me wanting to go in front of the axle was the overall cost of the project. with the setup I mentioned in the first post I was quoted from $325-$375 including labor and mufflers. Can anyone let me know about how much more exiting behind the rear wheels is going to cost? I really would like to run 2.5" duals with the 40 Series Flows

I paid $170 to have 2.5" pipe run from vette manifolds and exit behind the rear wheels at an angle(no pics, yet). For mufflers I bought summit "welded" mufflers, they are chambered mufflers sound alot better than the turbos I had. This was at a local shop they supplied all hangers etc....
What's costing you is the flowmasters, I believe they are around $60 a piece.

Mine exit right in front of the tires, and it is loud. Of course I have glasspacks too.

A guy i know ran his exhaust out infront of the rear tires on his '70 Chevy LWB, and he had problems with the heat from the pipes frying his paint. He may have just had cheap paint though.
I hope that $375 quote you got is for headers too. If it was just for an exhaust, sounds like a rip off. I got my exhaust done, 2.5" alluminized pipe, 40 seires Flows, that end above and infront of the rear axle, for $250 with parts and labor. I dont have any tailpipes, my exhaust ends at the outlets of the mufflers. I love it, it sounds really deep and throaty, plus just about everyone turns and looks at my truck when i'm driving it around. I have head flowmasters with tailpipes, and i think mine sounds better. Thats my two cents .

Thanks again for the help and opinions guys. I still havent decided what I"m going to do as of yet. The lowest I could find was $325 that would be 2.5" pipe from the collectors on the headers to the tailpipes and 40 series muffs plus labor. I'll let ya know what happens when I make a decision.

A set of 40s flows ,turned out the sides in front of the tires will be extreeemly loud! I tryed that,& cut them off & installed dynmax superturbos. I have Hooker comp headers,2 1/2" pipe/H pipe, turbo muffs,& 3" tail pipes(side exit ,with 4" resonated stainless tips)........still pretty throaty,but not bad enough to have every cop in town stoppin me. as far as price, i set up the system myself(had to "borrow" a buds pipe bender on a couple pcs),But have about $ 400 in parts,from the headers to the stainless tips.....Al

I got mine done at Mac's radiator in Portland. I think they have one in Salem also. I was very pleased with there work on the truck, but I wish I would've watched while doing the Camaro-it hangs a little low for my liking.

looks better now... i just redid my exhaust, from the headers back, for about $75... i got the pipes going out under my doors but you could run em out back by the tires... what i did was bolt some reducers to my headers, they hook right up, leave you with 2.5" pipe, then you get either 45 degree bent pieces or some down turns depending on the angle you want and some straight pipe, then you just clamp it all together, though you could weld it as well... like i said i ran out under the doors but you can run em further back... the clamps are cool cause you can change stuff without having to cut pipes etc.

Well I am going to call one more shop tomorrow and see what I can find out. Otherwise until my truck funding follows through, it looks like I'm going to have to pick up a couple FlowTech Raptors (Cheap Price ) and have them mounted back by the axle and dumped from turndowns mounted on the muffs until I can afford to get teh flows setup. I remember seeing a member here having pics of this setup, but with flows. If anyone has this pic or one similar please post it.Thanks for the ideas...too many options heh, too bad I can't just wake up and it will be done once and for all, of course I bet alot of us wish that too!

The tailpipe goes straight back from the mufflers and makes a 90 degree turn and exit in front of the tires. I had it done at a local muffler shop about 5 years ago. The headers are cheapies I bought at Super Shop about 5 years ago. It's all held up real well. The pipes were $225 w/turbo mufflers, the headers were on sale for $69.99

This may or not be a factor for Oregon, but in '97, F@#d 1/2 tons came with stock exhaust exiting before the wheel and that was the only year they did it. In colder climates the warm condensation collected on the rear wheel and would cause them to freeze up or cause the brakes to freeze. They also had problems with the exhaust "smoking" the left rear wheel so that it always had a brownish tint to it. Like I said may or may not be a factor for you, just something to consider. I personally think pipes out the side are sweet looking and louder (which is cool)
