Question 4x4 guage panel?

As I am putting a 85 4x4 together, I am curious if any gauge panel from a 2wd or 4wd would have the 4wd indicator light in it and it would be activated due to the wiring coming from the indicator switch on the transfer case. I have several panels and one has a clock in it and I believe it came from a 2wd and I would like to use it.
I just wonder if anyone has had this and knows. It seems like the circuit board would be the same. and the difference being the 2wd does not have any wiring from the T/C to activate the light.
Also, say I go to a swap meet and there are several sitting on the ground. Is there a simple way of telling the difference? Like, one will have a visible place marked 4WD on front?

Look in the speedometer area where the dummy lights are and see if there is one for 4wd?
I believe that it is just a switch on the 4wd lever or on the T-case that activates a bulb. So as long as your cab is originally 4wd it should plug right in and work.

I realize the transfer case has the switch that sends the message. What I am wondering is, can I use an instrument cluster that came out of a 2wd and still have the 4wd indicator light. I have a good cluster that has a clock that I want to use that came from a 2wd.
I don't know if the circuit boards are the same on 2 an 4 wheel drive trucks and the difference being the switch and maybe a bulb in the spot where the indicator light is.
