Is the automatic shift lever the same for a tilt and non-tilt column for a '72? I'm not talking about a van tilt but a real truck tilt.

They are not the same. The non-tilt has a ball end that sticks into the shift tube to pull it clear of the detents at the far end. The tilt has a sideways T shape with the bottom of the leg fitting into the detents inside the bowl.

Somebody just had 1 of each for sale very recently. They were shown side by side and the difference was very clear.
