breaking water pumps?
I am on my 3rd water pump. the first broke the shaft off and the fan went through the rad. the 2nd bent the impeller and the third is on now. I am running a regular fan and clutch w/o a shroud and a 4 inch extention to get the fan close to the rad. any ideas? is it the extention?

My advice is to find yourself a shroud and use a normal length extension. The further the fan blade is away from the bearings, the more stress it will put on the shaft, bearings, and housing.

Most likey its the extension...take it off
and put a shroud on. the clutch doesnt need to be against the rad (with a shroud on). -OR- your fan is badly out of balance, but I would still bet its the extension. ------------------ 71 Chevy C-10 SWB Fleetside WAS:307w/3-on-the-tree NOW:350TBI/700R4/3.73 See it at www.prismnet.com/~grzanich

Well 1st thing to check is make sure your belt pulleys are lined up. If one is out of line you will be putting side forces on it. Also the 4" extension sure adds a lot of leverage to any problems you may have. Definatly reccomend shroud or electric fan.
Check to see how the belt is wearing on the pulleys, if one side is worn out you know you have a pully problem. Good Luck, CoryM ------------------ 1970 heavy duty C-10 fleetside sport truck. A fan shroud sure would be cheaper than another new rad

You have a serious out of balance problem, obviously. The spacer is the place to start, junk it. Your fan may be bent as well so you might think about replacing it and its clutch as well even though they are $.
