Will the fuel tanks switch sides???

My fuel tank on my 74 is leaking, some joker before me put a screw in a hole in the tank. I noticed that gas was dripping from the plastic cover, pulled it off and saw the screw. The tank is the 16 gallon tank for the short bed. Now I have a tank for an 81 short bed, but the think is that the truck is has a left hand side tank, and the one for the 81 is a right hand tank. I was wondering if the tank will mount up on the passenger side mounds. I have the drivers side mounts I dont have a filler hole in the bed. So will the are the tanks the same for each side?????
Thanks a lot guys.

Tanks are swappable. They aren't specific to left and right sides.

What do you mean by the fill necks are differenet sizes? When I pulled off both of my 16 gallons for 1 20 gallon, both of the 16's were identical.

There is a difference in filler necks between 74 and 81. The main difference is the inside where the gas pump nozzel goes. 74 would be a leaded neck with no flapper and 81 would be a unleaded neck with a flapper in there so you couldn't put a leaded nozzel in it. Just use the neck from the 74 and you will be fine...

I just looked it up in the Chevy Duty catalog. 73-81 has a 1 1/4"filler pipe and 82-87 has a 1 5/8 filler pipe...

Good the tank I have is an 81, same same. I took and swaped the tanks last night. Every thing was the same. The sending units were differnant, they pointed differnant ways. All I had to do was swap out the sending units. Now you probally could use the other sending unit just bend around the hoses. The filler holes on the tanks were the same. The filler neck, the only one I had, that came with the truck was a smashed in on the inside?????
