repainting emblems - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a question about repainting the emblems for the truck. What kind of paint would you recommend? I'd like to paint them to match the paint job so I know I'll have to find a certain color mixture but I was curious what people have used to paint these things. I was curious if model paint would work or do I have to use auto paint?

I've wondered that, too. I want to spruce up my emblems on my 72. Would plain old Testors work?

not that i can tell without going through the whole forum since search is disabled.

the only reason i ask this is because i dont want the paint to just flake off later on. i'd like it to be there and not waste away. but i dont want to have to go fork out the dough for auto paint only to use a cup of it

I have used Testors enamel since it is glossy, bright and covers very well. I use a good solvent to clean the old paint and rough it up with a small wire brush. They come out as good as you could hope for...mine look great!

The hood bowtie (69 & 70) looks like it has a "light reflective type" plastic on the insert (blue), but you could paint it if you want to go that route. I'm not sure on the rest of the bowties for our trucks, the 67 & 68 don't look quite like there made from the same plastic material (the originals). My repop hood bowtie has all the black trim paint flaking off of it already (only about 1 year old), I redid my C/10 fender emblems @ 10 years ago and the trimpaint still looks good... go figure. i used VHT high temp chevy engine orange paint 2 years ago and it just started comin off around the edges, but i also didnt prep it well

I would tape off the chrome and prime and paint with a spray.

Years ago, I did the black parts on some trim pieces of a '72 Chevelle I had. The parts were white metal and had no plastic involved. I cleaned them up good, painted them and stuck 'em in the oven at about 200 F for a bit thinking it would bake the colour on. The paint seemed to stick real good, and was very hard. It lasted for years. Not sure how it would work with red tho? If you have an old piece you don't need to use it might be worth trying as an experiment?

I've thought of using red reflective tape over the red areas. Haven't done it yet though.
