What are the signs of needing a front end alignment?

My truck wonders every once in a while? What should I do?

Can you give more details on what it's doing? "Every once in a while" gives me the impression you may have some worn parts... which need to be replaced before you spend any effort on alignment.

The truck usually wanders when I hit bumps in the road (paved) and at high speeds (55+ on freeway). If I am driving slower it drives straight but if I hit the bumps at low speed it still wanders (not big bumps). I don't know where to begin but I want to feel a bit safer driving it around.

Definitely sounds like worn parts. I'd start by checking the slop in the steering box, Pittman and idler arms, and go out from there. I suspect you're going to find the steering box has lots of play in it.

Alright, sounds good. But how do I check that? Do they need to measured or just try to move them around by hand? I know I sound really stupid but I have never done any suspension work before.

I would recommend you take it to a professional. You can get some sense of whether you've got worn parts by isolating them and giving them a wiggle and tug here and there, but you don't want to misdiagonse something as critical as the suspension. Best case, you'll spend money on parts you don't need. Worst case, you could end up in a dangerous situation.
