'86 K10 Mpg

I'm curious to know what others with trucks similar to mine are seeing for MPG; mine's driven mostly on the highway but I haven't calculated the MPG lately. My setup:

'86 K10
Stock suspension & tires
2.73 gears
4-speed MT
305 Q-Jet, no air pump
Single exhaust, no cat
Initial timing 10 BTDC for 89 octane

My 86 K/10 long bed has a stock 305,stock suspension with 31" tires, 3:08 gears, 700R4 trans, dual 2 1/4 exhaust with stock manafolds, stock Q-jet, air pump,have no idea what timing is set at but uses 89 octane gas. I get about 6 MPG...

350 w/ 700r4 (not sure about gear ratio, but I think its too high for the 700r4)

I was getting 12 M.P.G. I am getting 14 M.P.G. after installing a rebuilt Q-Jet and replacing the plugs and wires. I calculate the gas milage quite often when I fill it up, and it doesn't seem to matter how fast or slow i drive as it still averages out to around 14 miles per gallon.

with my old 305 i got 8 mpg like i drive everyday, but one week i left my foot of the gas, and got 6, i am not lying i don't see how that happened it had a quadrajet new wires, cap, rotor, and plugs was timed at factory settings with a stock rearend i think it has 3.08 gears, and also a 350 tranny, i just put in a different motor so not for sure about the mileage on it though

19mpg-Wow! What year? I guess I need to get me a Holley 700r. Maby lower my body to not catch as much wind.

my 77 K20 gets 12 mpg. tired old 350/TH350/NP203 fulltime 4x4. 4.10 gears, and 30" tires. it probably does better than that, but the only time i checked it was with the 7.5' Western blade hanging on the front.

with a little tuning and an adjusted driving style, i'd almost bet you guys with low numbers can easily double your milage.

for milage purposes, a 700R4 is a decent idea, although not totally necesary. as for the "Holley 700r", you might try separating the features of the truck in question in your head... 700R4 trans, Holley 650.

BTW, for milage, you CANNOT beat a QJet.

Yeah it's a long bed with a cap on it. The biggest problem is the choke isn't opening all the way and it's running rich. I need to rebuild the carb,but it fires up with just a touch of the key...

My "old" '85 Silverado with a 305, 700R4, and 3.42 gears was getting anywhere between 11 and 14MPG back when I was actively calculating gas mileage.

I recently upgraded to an '86 Sierra with a 350, TH400, and 3.73 gears. I haven't worked out the mileage yet. However, on the old '85 Silverado I was doing about 200 to 250 km per tank (down to 1/4 tank left), and now with the '86 I'm doing somewhere between 150 and 200km per tank (again to about 1/4 tank left).

Hmmmm....

Hey Chuck, I can't get over that 6MPG... It makes me reconsider buying a 73-87 when I can get this for a comparable price... These models get 5MPG, but the older deuces get 12-14. lol Makes ya wonder...

I'm sure that choke not opening all the way is really killing the mileage. I rebuilt my Q-jet and put a manual choke on it, but the choke cable was binding up in the housing. I drove about 90 miles half choked and waisted 15 gallons. When it is working properly, I can get about 180-190 miles out of 15 gallons.

What is the deal with our trucks and bad mpg? Years ago on a '72 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 350/350 Auto I was getting really bad mpg so I got me a Edelbroke intake and what they use to call the "fuel saver carbertor" and I got around 17mpg. A great improvement. But now they say they can not get that four barrel any more. It has been about 17 or more years ago when I got the "fuel saver" Go figure.

with my 76 (LWB, 350, stock gearing) i went from 7mpg with crapped out Qjet to around 17mpg with Edelbrock 600cfm running slightly lean

wow... i got better milage than some of you guys with stock engines driving an 82 C10 with a VERY lumpy cam, and a 3000 stall converter. i was getting almost 10 out of that. you guys REALLY need to figure out that tuning for power isnt everything. you've got trucks, not racecars.

454/700R4 12ish in town, and around 17-18 on the highway. Oh, and my 454 makes 500 hp.

I am averaging 10.5 - 11mpg. I just rebuilt the stock Rochester Q-jet, but I am contemplating swapping this for the Edelbrock 1406.

DONT! the larger primaries of the 1406 will kill you low end power, as well as mpg. i went trhough the same thing with my Trans Am, and noticed a significant loss in fuel economy, as well as upper end power because the secondaries on the 1406 are so much smaller. yes, your grandma could tune the 1406, but with a little work the QJet will make you much happier.
