I wouldn't run without one myself. I always make sure mine are in good working order too. They call it an emergency brake for a reason. If you lose your regular brakes, you can use the emergency brake to stop. (carefully) I used this to get home one day after a big rock destroyed my brake lines.
What about parking on a steep hill? It's not something most of us do daily but you never know when you'll have to. Very bad for the transmission or worse for the front end of you truck when it lets go and rolls down the hill!
