Arizona Emissions with an Edelbrock Carb!
I took the burb to emissions today with the Edelbrock 1406 carb. I have gone down 2 steps from the way it came out of the box. Everything past the test, except idle CO. That barely failed.
I pulled the truck out made a couple of adjustments to the carb and 3 minutes later I was getting tested again. Look at these numbers!! What a clean running vehicle Even the Emissions guy said WOW! Hehe, I love this carb

It is what causes that big nasty orange haze that hangs in the valley It is so thick that when you fly through it, it actually feels like air turbulance.
Andy, with that west nile mosquito virus going around back east, mabe you can earn some extra money doing mosquito abatement :p hehe Im sure your truck is tuned perfect for it

Should get better gas milage too. I do smogs in california and youve got it easy compared to us as far as standards go. Readings like the ones you got on your initial test would have put your truck in the "gross polluter" loop, forcing you to go to test only centers for smog checks for a few years. But then agian, we dont test anything earlier than 74 anyways.

I didn't think my first test was that bad? I just missed on one of the 4 test and not by much ?
You have to remember the standards for 1974 are harder than 1968

My 402 went right thru again with that carb.........never been a problem, right out of the box. Wish we had Cali laws, wouldn't have to pay the fees to show the state it runs clean.

No sticker, but you can't register and get plates until you pass. It is linked with the DMV computer.

So you have to pass 1968's emissions standards if you have a 1968 truck? I know Pheonix has some had smog but not the rest of AZ. In washington we only test something like 3 or 4 of the larger counties in the state for Smog and even then it is only newer vehicles that are tested.

mikep, Yes there are diffferent standards for the different years. So 1968 will have a lot easier standards than 1974 with cats. I think that is why my original test for the burb might have looked like a "gross pollutor" to Low67C10. I think he might be looking at the 68's numbers and comparing them to the standards for a 1974, which is as far back as Cali goes now.
Only the big counties in AZ test. I think it is the counties with Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff are the only ones that test.

6+% on idle and 3+% loaded is extremely rich reguardless of the standards, at about 7% it starts burning your eyes. What you have to understand is the standard is the maximium allowable is much higher than what would be considered correct . Keep in mind that the carbon monoxide emission is directly related to air/fuel ratio. I was looking in the books here and as of the late 90s(back when you had to do smog checks on all post 64 vehicles) here in Cali, the max allowable for a 68 truck up to 8501 GVWR was HC 350 and CO 2.5% and is considered a "gross polluter" at HC 500 and 5% CO.

I guess Cali's standards are stricter than AZ's. But truck is defiantely not gross any more At least not "gross" a polluter.

Yeah, the readings in the second test look great. Looks like the engine is in good mechanical condition.
