I wouldn't say it was dumb, they had to have room behind the bezel for the headlight switch and the wiper switch so the inner part of the cluster had to be smaller, no choice. there is 8 screws that hold the bezel to the rest of the cluster and the bezel is what hold it all in place with the 6 screws you can see from the outside. to undo the cluster takes all of 3 minutes, remove the knobs as we said earlier, unhook speedo, unplug the cluster, then unscrew the oil pressure line( if appliciable), remove the two screws that hold the u shaped plate to the dash where the column enters the dash to get to the bolt to loosen the column,then loosen the column and then remove the 6 screws that you can see from the outside and it will slip right out. reverse these instuctions exactly for reinstalling the cluster. It's really very easy and only takes about 30 min to get old one out and new one in. Randy
