79 was still full time 4wd time....as a general rule of thumb thats not allways correct....half and 3/4 tons came with 203's...1 tons allways got the dana 60 fronts and np205's. GM did a weirdo in 80....all K5's came with 205's....regardless across the board....before that usually a standard trans allways got the 205...but like i said there has been some weirdness out there such as one my friend in phx bought....79 1 ton crew cab...ex gov rez truck....straight 6/ th400/ np203...
Easy way to figure it out without cleaning crud looking for the tag in the case is to look at the rear of the case....if there is a small metal plate with three bolts between the output shaft on the top and the case cover on the bottom you have a np205....and the most desirable stough version ava.
