Mouse Damage
How to prevent it? My trucks will be parked in the pasture for the winter. I have seen lots of mouse nests in the ac vents of these trucks...how do you prevent this from happening? I have even seen cars in locked dry storage...2003 Corvette with unbelieveable interior and wiring damage due to mice. All you farm boys give me your tried and true remedies!!!!!

Here's an article I just found. It seems logical but how about those moth balls under the hood...do they work?

i asked about this once and someone said those dryer sheets you toss in the dryer with your clothes work well. sprinkle them around in the truck and it should smell good in the spring .... i have no idea if this really works.

My (now oldiron's) flatbed was stored for years on a farm in Eastern, WA...lots of mice around. The owner put a can of moth balls under the hood and there was no sign of mouse damage to the truck...at all!

Moth balls will work. They also draw moisture out of the air, so if you have problems with tools rusting you can put a few in your toolbox. Just don't put them directly on the sheet metal, they will cause severe rusting. At our museum we buy them by the box, and put them in tuna cans. The mice don't like the odor. Same goes for skunks, which are a problem around here.

I wish the previous owner of my truck had put some effort into keeping the rodents out of the truck. I just removed my heater box and found it FULL of "STUFF" from a rodent. Explains why half my seat cushion is missing!

I'm lucky. A feral cat has adopted my '67 Suburban roof as his hangout. He hates humans and I'm no cat person, but it's the perfect mercenary relationship. He's field gray, so I call him <<Mauser>>. He justs gives me that F^*& -off and die look with his bloodshot yellow eyes. If I pretend he's not there, he'll stay. When I used to go "Hey Kitty"... He'd split.

For cars stored inside I buy those yellow wedges of mouse poison. I put one in the car and one on the outside somewhere.
My bass boat, which has been stored the three winters of its life in a shed that is mostly open on one side, I do something different. I get one cool whip container for each compartment. Then I buy a bar of Irish Spring soap. I shave the soap into the containers and place a container in each compartment. So far so good after three winters. But you better like Irish Spring because the boat smells like that for a month or two when I take it out of storage.

A friend of mine built a 55 Chevy with leather like upholstery. To make it smell authentic the upholsterer put chips of real leather under the seats. Most people did not know the difference.
As far as the mice thing goes, the cat sounds like a good idea as long as you don't have a convertible (which we don't). My neighbors cat used to sleep on top of my Camaro convertible and leave hair on it (not good). His presence caused the other cats to spray the wheels (not good). Medium animal trap and canned tuna works good. Catch and release and they usually don't return. I use the sticky floored mouse house traps. Occupied: Out with the garbage. Vacant: In with a new mouse house.

A few cats adopted (as an outhouse) the truck I bought. No mouse poop.

We use Irish spring and Bounce softener sheets. So far so good. We also put the Irish spring in stockings and tie them to trees and such to keep the deer away. It works. Oh yes we recently got a Kitty too. Since we got Grady the catch numbers have been dropping.

Hey 68orangeshine. Sounds like a girl I used to live with for about 5 years once. I had to say that. Sorry for stealing the thread but it was wide open.

In my shop,I offer tasty green appetizers at all times.Seems like they get tired of them from time to time because after a while they go untouched.

I'd throw a box or two of moth balls, dryer sheets and vanilla air fresheners in the truck and you should be covered.
Throw in a garlic or two and that should keep the vampires away too. Oh man...it is too early for my stupid jokes. LOL Mike
