stupid leaky collector gaskets
Anyone have any good ways to seal up collector gaskets? The flanges are a little bent, and I think that's most of my problem. Anyways I've used the cheapo papers ones, copper, and aluminum, and they still leak!
Thanks |

Must be a NW thing! My drivers side started leaking Saturday! I've tried the dead soft and they were no better than the paper ones. I need a solution too! Jeff.

Cut the flanges off and use a band clamp. Has worked for me in the past.

I have had my fair share of exhaust leaks. Might want to try a double gasket, that has worked for me in the past. If your flanges are bent it will be really difficult to have any gasket hold up. Good Luck

I have always used Percys Aluminum gaskets. To get a good seal you have to take a file to the mating surfaces and then wire brush them good. I never had one fail after that.

I just got my headers re-coated from jethot. The flange on them is fine. Its the flange on teh other side. Maybe I ought to just take it to a muffler shop and have a new collector installed.

It's all in the mating surfaces guys. If they are bent up, nothing is going to keep them sealed. Also if they are not perfectly angled (one slightly off) they will not seal. The best thing to do is to go to a decent muffler shop and have them cut off your current flanges, and weld on some new ones. Make sure they bolt together the two with the gasket in and then tack weld the collector exactly where it should be. Now remove your gasket if it is paper and weld all the way around.
I guarentee you won't have another leak... I haven't had a single leak since I built my exhaust even with all the nitrous backfires and such...
