im not having much luck selling my 71 4x4 4sp truck. lots of interest untill they discover its a 4spd. so im kicking around converting to auto..i have everything to do it. how much could i get for the 4sp and transfer case if i sold them? or are they just a boat anchors?

I have seen them as low as 40 for tranny only, and 150-200 range for complete setup. Those are going prices from the 4x4 boards I frequent, covering WA & N/W OR. Personally I have a '76 10 spline adaptor & 205 setup for sale for $150 for the past 2 months.... no bites.

Keep it 4-speed. It'll sell. You'll lose money converting from manual to auto (as would going the other way).

I think one should only convert from manual to auto or from auto to manual on a truck one wants to keep long term. Such a move should only be made to satiate personal preferences for one or the other. JMHO. To each his own.

I bought a 4spd K/20 last year,I like it.I agree with 4x4poet.It`s true,most people that go with the herd will want an auto.But,there are diehard manual guys,too.Manual=better mileage,lower gear for off road,and true lock-up for engine breaking.The latest trend in 4wds is rock crawling and they are just getting into autos,barely.Oh yeah,autos make more heat problems at low speed or under torque when a manual is happy as a lark.(are larks the only happy birds?).Be patient,it`ll sell as is.

I agree, keep it a 4spd.I have a 72 k-20 witha 4spd.The only time i wish it was an auto,is in stop and go traffic.My clutch leg gets tired.

I got rid of an auto truck because it was worthless for compression braking in the steep hills around here in Southern Ore./ Northern Cal. There is a clue when you put your truck in low range ( with the auto) just to get down some steep grades on local roads around the hills out here without heating up brakes. With the 4-speed 3rd, or for realy steep hills loaded with fire wood or some extreme load, drop down to 2nd , and you can loaf down the mountain without ever touching the brakes!!!

I'm sold!

I agree as well. Many times I have gone to buy a vehicle only to find out it was an auto. I would not have one. I am a standard guy all the way and in fact if I were looking to buy your truck that would be a requirment. Good luck and don't change a thing.

both my trucks are 4 spds, the burb is auto. I like driving the 4 spds in the trucks. Can't beat the auto in the burb though.

I've got an auto in mine, and I love it. It's the first automatic I've had in 10 years. I haven't been out in the hills much, but will 4wl and first gear really be that bad on the downhill runs? I have pretty low gear in the rear end, judging by the shift points and engine rpm on highway. Deer season starts in a few weeks, so I'll find out as soon as I can start scouting. Maybe I won't like the auto so much in a month....

Automatics are cool.I have both.The question is whether this truck won`t sell with a manual 4spd.I think CG has his answer,plenty of manual fans,it`ll sell.You could always offer the auto set-up at extra cost($500?),and maybe offer to buy-back the 4spd set-up once removed($200?).Then you`d have the truck sold(for $300 more)and get the swap done for free.

It will sell. Find a farmer... I have owned plenty of both manual and auto chevy trucks (got 4 60's and 3 70's trucks right now). I refuse to buy a auto truck anymore (unless its free

). I am tired of auto's going out...they just can't take the abuse that the old manuals can. Its much easier to change a clutch than rebuild an auto.

Funny thing: I grew up in Lisbon MD, just a couple min from you special-K!

i was ata dealership the other day and was told my truck wouldn't be worth much because it was a manual... i told the guy that i don't buy vehicles with automatics if the is any avoiding it and he jsut looked at me with a dumb stare...i hate people love my manuals though. i even got my girlfriend to buy a 5 speed stratus and shes sold as well

My 72 is a 4sp and I wouldnt have it any other way.....My Dad converted his 75 3/4 4X4 to auto and whenever I drive it now it just dont feel right in a truck....but hey that's just my 2c.......

Yeah,People drive automatics like a one speed...ON.When you have to shift,you "decide" to go to the next gear.I see people driving in parking lots like it`s a hiway.I ordered a`92 GMC K3500 SRW with all the bells and whistles,plus a 5spd.Pretty cool with buckets`n`console,sporty.

Its kinda of interesting, It seems to be a regional thing.. Here on the left coast (Washinton and Oregon) you can't hardly give away one with a manual.. but as soon as you get near Idaho/Montana/North Dakota its just the opposite.. Hmmmmmmm... Over the years I have just tossed out many complete 4spds and transfer cases because of that..
Personally as I have aged.. I prefer an auto.. just put it in "D" for Dummy.. LOL

I loved the 3-on-the-tree in my C-20, it was tight and worked well...............Total Blast to drive. When I put the Cummins it I couldn't use it any longer. I would love to have a stick again. My truck now was converted from three/tree to 350 floor shifter. If you wasn't so far away I would love to get youre truck. Right know I am trying to get rid of my swb c-10 to get a stick 4x4.

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm
