Might check for leaks in the fill neck down to the tank. The vent tubes on my 72 ran up into the top of the cab and smelled constantly. I ended up relocating the tank to the back when I backhalfed the truck. I was fearful of blowing myself up (smoker). Check for leaks and replace all gaskets worn or not and you should some diminishing returns, or try a stronger cologne or after shave.
