Gas tank replacement
HI guys
Picked up an 85 K20 Plow truck last winter on the cheap that has sat since the last snow. Gas tank leaks. Is this an easy swap and any reccomendations for who to buy a replacement from? Thanks

Re: Gas tank replacement
I just ordered one from LMC truck. I'll tell you how it goes. It's a 20 gallon in a 1985 C10 LWB.

Re: Gas tank replacement
The swap isn't too tough.
Support the tank, disconnect the filler at the bed, remove the ground wire attachment on the inside of the frame rail, and pull the bolts that attach the tank hangers to the frame. You can lower the tank enough to disconnect the three fuel lines from the sender and finally remove the tank with the hangers. Be prepared to replace the tank hangers and the sender if the tank leaks, I had too on my street driven 84. I pulled my tank to fix the plastic tank cover that had dropped and had to replace everything because of rust. |

Re: Gas tank replacement
I just buttoned up my tank re-install this weekend. My number one tip: Take Off The Bed! I didn't because I thought I could just do it from underneath. It was a huge pain to do the whole thing from underneath. I agree with replacing the tank hangers while you're under there. Mine were all rusted out. Also, the plastic cover (if you have one) traps water and sand which causes the tank to rust faster. Drill some drain holes in it if you're going to put it back on.

Re: Gas tank replacement
Hard to take it off from underneath? It takes me 20 minutes or so to swap one over.
Where is the leak? Is it huge, a pin hole or is the whole thing rusted out? If it's not too bad of a hole they make a two part compound to repair the tank. It's $8 clean the surface mix the putty slap it over the hole and your done. Ive used this on older motor homes which replacment tanks are nearly impossible to get and it does the job. If you wanted new I'd try http://www.performanceradiator.com/ They sell new gas tanks fairly reasonable price. Used try. http://www.car-part.com/

Re: Gas tank replacement
I get them from a local supplier. They are Spectra-Premium brand, and they're under $100 CDN.

Re: Gas tank replacement
you can get tanks from ebay DIRT CHEAP check out A1 auto.. plastic is the best for norther areas. i just got a renu gastank from the local place paid to much 141$ for it and had to give them an old tank. they guy told me that the have a lifetime warranty on them so i cant complain to much on the price. they are coated with PVC inside and out. i also seen an older one on a truck in the J yard and it was in GREAT SHAPE so i would also check that route out..

I cut an tire-tube into strips and used that.
