They can be used as a control for RPM when operating a power take off device like a winch, snowplow, hoist. Some off-roaders like to use them as a gas control if their foot is in the clutch while rockcrawling. Kind of dangerous to use as a poor man's cruise control.

I grew up on a ranch and my dad had one on his 72. We used it feeding cows. Set the truck in 4 wheel low, granny gear, pulled the throttle out a few clicks and let it go across the field by itself while we unloaded the hay from the back of the truck. It was amazing what that truck would go through (snow and mud) just above an idle given it had a ton of hay in the back.

When I was younger I had a job driving a 1 ton flatbed dodge delivery truck. My friend and I got drunk one day and were climbing the levys in it. We got out and sat back to watch as it was on the side of the levy spinning the tires in the grass with the choke pulled out a little. Now I think back and say "man, what if those tires would have grabbed".

In my younger yrs I would drive on some of the beachs here in Fl. like Daytona beach. I would set the hand throttle to the posted speed. With the top off my blazer I would then sit on the rollbar or seatback and steer with my feet. You know how it is, anything for attention. Did that off and on for a number of yrs and only got two warnings and no tickets from the law.

Once while I was in the deserts of southern Cali doing a manuvering excersize, the throttle cable broke on my hummer, I used the hand throttle to haul my comander around.

Anyone know how to set up a throttle rig on a '71 K/5 Jimmy? I've got the cable, knob and dash "THROTTLE" tab off a '69 GMC. [I used it as a manual choke for a while until the right stuff came from a vendor.] Now I'm trying to reverse engineer a manual throttle. On the '68s the cable went thru the firewall and connected to the lower hole on the accelerator lever in the engine bay, but on the '71s &'72s I think the cable just snakes down and around under the dash and connects with the gas pedal arm inside. That must be why there's a big shinkicker plate above the accelerator arm pivot on some trucks. What hardware would be used to complete this option? I don't think it's in the Factory Asm Mnl [the '68 type is, but not the later one] Of course I'd have to move the wiper switch over to the left since I've already got a manual choke, but that's no biggie.
Anybody remember? |

I used mine to idle up my one ton wrecker when I wanted to use the air compresor I had mounted on the engine to run impact wrenches and air up tires ,man that thing worked great with just air conditioning compresor to push air in the tank.
I wish I had that truck back.
