67 power steering box

I just wanted to double check, I was going through a parts book the other day, and they list a power steering box for 68-72 4x4 trucks......since the 67 is not included does that mean its not interchangable? I didn't see a seperate listing for a 67 only box, so I am confused

Re: 67 power steering box

My '67 C10 panel (1/2 ton, 2wd) has factory pwr steering.

When I bought my new pwr steering gear for my project truck, it was listed as '1976 and prior'...

Re: 67 power steering box

Some '67 frames don't have a dimple in the chassis rail to clear a bump on the back of the power steering box. My old '67 did have the dimple, so maybe yours does too. Some board members with '67 trucks have said they made a dimple by heating up the frame and by forming a dimple with a hammer.

Re: 67 power steering box

Re: 67 power steering box

Early 67 has a ram style power steering setup (like the corvettes), later 67 have the same style power steering as 68-87.

So, if you have a power steering gearbox, it will work. (The early ram style still uses the manual steering gearbox)

Re: 67 power steering box

My 68 k20 project has no dimples on the frame which leads me to believe I have a 67 frame under this truck. Anyway, there is an aftermarket kit, 2 plates that will bolt up on this frame (flat, no dimples), you only have to drill one extra hole. Don't be putting any heat on the frame in this area, it's a popular place to crack the frame. Another thing is your steering column. Mine is straight, a solid shaft with no joints all the way up to the steering wheel. You have to make sure everything is lined up perfect because you have very little play. You'll also have to replace your rag joint because the new steering gear spline will probably be different. I was able to get everything working but the drag link is a little suspect, but it does work.

Re: 67 power steering box

some 68's were made without the dimple, I've never seen a 67 personally that had the dimple.
On a 2 wheel drive, heating it is not really an issue, but the 4x4 trucks are known for cracking in that area.
The spacer kit that is mentioned is not really a good idea, it throws the geometry off and can cause real fast wear on the gear box.

Re: 67 power steering box

I have never seen a 67 with a dimple, I have had a few. Plus I have 2- 68 4X4,s and a 2X4 68 burb without dimples.
The adapter plate throws off the geometry of the 2 wheel drive front end. To get it back you have to space the idler arm out the same distance PLUS the cross bar which the tie rods mount to widen a similiar amount.
What I have done on one is to notch the frame and made a reinforcing plate to go inside the frame.
One one of my 4x4's and I will get around to doing the others is I made a plate for the outside of the frame and one for the inside of the frame to mount the P/S box. The outside brace has the notch so it spaces the box out from the frame. I welded both plates to reinforce the frame, then made a bracket to go from the inside frame 2 forward box bolts to the front cross member.
44's and a red neck attitude four wheeling hasn't cracked the frame yet!
On 4X4 spacing out the box from the frame doesn't mess with anything.
My 4 cents worth........the advice is worth what you paid for it!

Re: 67 power steering box

Mine's a 67 according to the VIN# CS147Z136220 and I think it has the dimple everyone is talking about. Will any power steering box from a 1976 and earlier 1/2 ton work?
