just traded my 87 wrangler for a 84 silverado and the owner said ih has a 700r4 , is this true? i figured it was too old for a 700r4 but it is a 4 spd. and how hard is it to rebuild/change the lockout hubs?

Re: just got a 84 and have some questions

Actually, the 700r4s came out in the early 80s (unsure exactly when). So, the trans in the 84 could be a 700r4. To be sure, compare your trans pan shape to the identification pics on 73BigBock's 73-87.com site. I don't know 'bout the hubs.

Re: just got a 84 and have some questions

A lot of the 84 through 86 trucks came with a 350C tranny. This was a three speed tranny with a lock-up convertor. There were trucks sold with a 700R4 tranny in those years also. The defining items for that would be 1) the four speed shift indicator, 2) The shape of the tranny pan (basically square in shape), and the numbers forged on the side of the tranny housing (passenger side) which I believe is M8 or MD8.
