Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!
LOL!
These trucks were on used car lots when i was born... but I'm still old enough that I have problems standing up straight in the morning. That's one of the things I like about the steering wheel being so close to me in the truck, I can lean on it on my way to work in the early morning when my back hasn't had enough time to loosen up. |

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!
stllookn, When I stretch the frame it will be done with the upmost safety kept in mind. I have an uncle that has been a hot rodder / fabricator since the late 50s, early 60s. He has a 37 GMC that he stretched the cab and frame on, and tows a 5th wheel trailer cross country with it. He will be helping me with the stretch. I plan on cutting the frame at a 45 degree angle to seperate it. I am making sleeves out of another chassis I have by cutting about a 1/4" out of the center and welding it back together. I will slip the sleeve inside the frame, make a 6" seperation from the front section to rear section and weld everything together. The take another frame section 6" long and slip it into the gap created by the seperation. Then weld it in. That will give me two thicknesses of the frame in that area. I may even take some 1/4" plate and box that area in. It will be stronger in that area than everywhere else in the chassis. I think that it will be fine.. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Overkill is the best policy on frame mode IMO.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!
go for it ,a BB 402 doesnt come factory in a 4 x 4 anyway. Turning it into a longhorn 4 x 4 would not change the value much.It would just look much more badass with a better engine.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!
I really wanted to make mine into a longhorn during the buildup as well. My frame was long enough that we only had to move the rear end back a bit and re-drill the holes. I couldn't find a suitable donor box although. I say to go for it, and make it into a dually. Then put a GMC front end on it and slap some 930 badges onto, then it would even be rarer.

Re: To cut or not to cut!! This is the question!!
Do it.If I had the $$$,time, space, and spousal support I would build one of everything and then come up with ideas like this for more.
