What would you do?
I have a 350/330 crate motor I bought last year and I want more horsepower. Here are the optioms that I am looking at:
1. Install one of the new Vortech Carburated Superchargers with all accessories. This will give me approx. 450hp with 5 lbs of boost. 2. Sell the small block and put in a new ZZ502 big block which will give me 502hp.

I vote for the 502-I have a 502 HO (450 HP, 550 ftlb TQ) in my 71 Cheyenne--Ye Haw does it run ( be aware that they use oil like crazy-1 qt. every 300 or 400 miles but no smoke or leaks at any time--very strange)
P.S. TQ is king on the street. www.geocities.com/jhow66/2-.html

Ebfabman,
I just dropped off the bed today at the body shop. The cab, fenders and hood will go there next week. The frame gets powdercoated next week as well. Man I can't wait to get this thing done. jhow66, That is a lot of oil. This is the first I have heard about a 502 burning oil like that.

I read that about oil consumption too and wondered. I'll bet the rings aren't seated yet, or he switched to synthetic before it was fully broke in.
At least I know where my oil is going. My concrete driveway is slowly turning into blacktop...

My 402 doesn't use any oil, but the 350 I put in the Studebaker sure does...........I figured it must be a horsepower thing!
Go with the 502!

Hey guys I have over 5000 miles on my engine and it uses the same amount now as it did to start with. Using only 10w30 like Gm says. Checked with GM on oil usage and they say check with your dealer. Checked with dealer(Pace Performance Parts) and they say it is because of low tension oil rings that are used in these motors. The motors does not smoke at any time--cruise-flat out-startup or back off and does not leak a drop.Plugs are showing no sign of this much oil usage. Having said all this I would still buy another as it sure does haul the mail. But I think for this kind of money GM should forewarn you about it. Sorry to be so long winded but I still vote for the 502.

Go with the 502...and when you get tired of that, throw that Vortech on it. It's bottom end is stout enough to withstand the blower.....unlike the weaker bottom end of the 330 crate engine.
jhow66- all 502s use low tension oil rings....which means oil consumption is a fact of life. The only way to get rid of the oil burning is to change out the rings to standard type oil rings. Got this info from Scoggin Dickey's latest catalog.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I was leaning toward the 502 all along. I just needed to justify it. I'm going to order one from Scoggin-Dicky in a couple of weeks.

I guess i am the odd ball, with the theory
"There is a replacement for displacement, it is called technology!" I say, go for fuel injection and a turbo. But I am biased being a GMC typhoon owner. I was a big engine guy at one time, until I owned a NICE turbo car. I have been converted. I enjoy the 18mph on hiway, and 313 RWHP 450ft lbs out of a STOCK 4.3 V6. Can't wait to get time, money, energy to put a turbo on the 70 GMC. hmmm 600+ hp, 700ft lbs... that should be ok....

The thing about centrifugal superchargers are that you really need a dyno to set them up properly and to get your jetting just right so you wont run too lean. i suggest getting a small roots style like a weiand 142. Nsane has one on his truck. they fit under the hood and cost considerably less than a centrifugal supercharger if you're going to go the supercharger route.
but then again you really should run forged pistons with forced induction. if you can afford the 502 then go for it.
