Does anyone have photos of 71 and/or 72 shift linkages? My72 with a turbo 350 has a linkage that runs strait from the column to the tranny, but my 71 parts truck has a linkage that runs to a pivot bracket that is mounted on the frame. Which is better/more reliable. The strait link feels funny sometimes like it is not a positive positioning and will maybe move, if that makes any sense.

My 70 has the pivot bracket. The 72 parts truck had the same pivot bracket.

on your '72 are you talking about an aftermarket cable linkage, or one from a different vehicle? i've only seen the pivot brackets. i had a b&m quicksilver floor shifter on my '61 apache 10 when i was in high school. the cable linkage sucked. i had to trust whatever dopey passenger i had to not kill me while i crawled under the truck to get it in park. it took me a while to fix things back then. if i were you i'd grab the pivot assembly. i use 1/2 of a spark plug boot and a cotter pin to keep mine secure.

To 13lazer, no it is a normal shift rod. Krue i was told today that the pivot bracket had a spring on the pivot shaft which is not there now, what can i use if can't find one?

It's hard to tell from the grease but in the bottom picture the spring has a washer on either end of it (slotted in the center but a regular washer would probably work).

The arm on the tranny on mine is different, it is about 2-1/2" long with a couple bends and a hole for the linkage. i'll have to run the numbers an find out what i got. Thanks for the info an pics.

My suggestion is to go to a shift linkage from Lokar. I bought one and took out all that pivot stuff. Made it really clean and simple.

My linkage is not like that last pic, twisted bracket style. Mine is straight and don't know if that makes a difference or not? Mentioning this because my linkage is at a wierd angle, binds up a little bit.

The truck was originally a 6cyl, now has a V8, what mouting location does the V8 need to be in on the franme? The front set of holes or the rear? Mine is on the front set, the HEI is about 2-3 inches from the firewall if that matters.

looks most like the Lokar photo from kelsfine69, which would probably be my best bet. unless i change the arm on my tranny! what year tranny has the u-shaped arm on a th350?

I had the same setup as above but I lost the spring also. I like to break motormounts and then the engine hopping would cause my shifting linkage to break all the time. I ended up fixing the motor mounts one last time and then welded to bolts the the plate that bolts to the transmission. This way i could screw nuts on over the other bracket and keep the hole dang thing nice and tight. Just a suggestion.

I used Lokar also....easy to install, smooth shift, clean look. Does away with those brackets.
