VIN location needed

The DMV needs to see separate different VIN tags on my ’72 2wd blazer. Obviously one is next to the door latch, but where is the other? They want to send me to the CHP and if the other number is somewhere easily accessible I would like to skip that trip.

Re: VIN location needed

I think (but I'm not positive) there is one stamped on the drivers side frame rail by the engine mount.

Re: VIN location needed

When I registered my '72 truck, they checked the VIN on my door frame, and for some reason there's a sticker on the back of the actual door that has the VIN printed on it that they accepted for the second VIN. Also the model number which includes the numbers of the VIN can be found on the option sticker on the glovebox door. They might accept that. Fortunately they did not check the VIN stamped on my chassis as shown in that post by Longhorn Man because my frame VIN does not match my VIN plate.

I just went through this with my 77. The DMV refused to approve because only had original VIN plate and they said I needed two. I could not find another anywhere on the truck.

I took it to the CHP and the guy walks outside to look at it, stares at the vin plate for a few seconds and says it looks original. That's it. NO hassle, no gripes, no nothing. EASY.

The DMV in CA is soooo on top of things.....

So the moral of the story is make your appointment at the CHP and let them deal with it since its their rule. Believe me, they will sign your release no issue.

One thing though...i had to wait 3 months for an appointment with th CHP when i called. When I went to the location, there was NO ONE in sight. The office was dead with two nice officers waiting for something to do. TALK ABOUT process.

Re: VIN location needed

Mine has a number on the frame to the right on the PS pump too. Can't make it out with all the grime. I Recently registered mine and just brought in the title and my DL. Got the Sticker on the spot and new title 7-10 days later, sight unseen. Guess it depends on where you live. I grew up in MD and inspection was the problem, took me a year and a half to get an old blazer of mine on the road. Here in TX they are more resonable, but need inspection every year.

Re: VIN location needed

my CHP appointment is a few weeks out. I hope it is as easy as some of you say. The guy at the DMV said "its never a good thing, if you have to go to the CHP"

A co-worker of mine had to got to the CHP to get an overseas Mini approved for registration. He thought he had everything the DMV would need, but still they sent him to the CHP. At the CHP the officer looked at his paperwork and approved him in 5 minutes. The officer started ranting about how lazy/stupid the people at the DMV are!

I hope this is the case. It was raining and cold outside when they looked at it. I think they just wanted to go back inside.

Re: VIN location needed

Any police or sheriff can do the California physical inspection for the Vin number.. Just stop by your local police or sheriff, tell them what you need. They do not like to do it but the form states they can. Have the form with you.

Is it something that an office only needs to sign? Or do they need to stamp or give you another form?

In any case I would want the cop to be in the best possible mood. I would wait for the appointment.

Re: VIN location needed

I have pulled over when I saw an officer setting in his car and asked to get it signed. They did.
