Most likely an O2 sensor.

Re: Code 45 on a TBI truck
Replaced the O2 sensor and it still idles very poorly. If I don't keep my foot in it, it wants to die. My code book says the code 45 is "rich exhaust indicated". I replaced the IAC valve already. What about the TPS? Fuel evaporator canister filter? How do I get that filter out to check it? What else would cause a "rich fuel" reading on a TBI engine? Thanks for the replies!
BTW, how do I check for a plugged cat?

Re: Code 45 on a TBI truck
there is lots of possible causes of rich exhuast may be hard to determine without a scanner to actually see the data of all the sensors, might check timing, check and make sure the egr valve is not stuck open, check for vacum leaks, basicly anything that would affect engine vacum to be low would make the map sensor read higher than normal and cause a rich exhuast code.

Re: Code 45 on a TBI truck
82, I'm pretty sure the TBI is in good condition. I just rebuilt it (after crapped out on me!) and it looked brand new after I cleaned it up. No cracks or missing parts.
bejay, wish I had a scanner. Those are really nice. It would eliminate alot of guess work. I'll be sure to check the EGR, and the other things you listed. Thanks. Anyone know if the evaporator canister comes apart or do I have to buy a whole new one. Autozone lists a replacement charcoal "filter" for it, but damn if I can figure out how to open the thing.

Re: Code 45 on a TBI truck
I pretty much let the truck sit all week. I replaced the PCV and started it up this morning. It's still stumbling and I smell a sweet smell. I put my hand behind the exhaust and there's a fuel mist coming out. Starting to think I may have a spark problem now, because the injectors are putting out a good cone-shaped pattern. How do I go about checking this out? I can do plugs, cap and a rotor. What else?
