Re: Roof Seam...

I know on the s-10 blazers there roof seems on the side is a flex point and they crack. But I dont know about our trucks and was wondering the same thing.

Re: Roof Seam...

Unless you are driving the thing in an off road derby like Baja, I could not imagine that the cab would need to flex there. You mentioned an S-10 blazer, but look at the length and material that their roof are made of and that they have a one piece body. I'm sure GM put this seam there so that the parts they stamped would not be so large. I ran a weld bead down the length of the seam, then finished it with a little filler. I belive even Chip Foose has done this.

Re: Roof Seam...

Mine has been filled by the PO. It is cracked all to crap. I do not know if he welded it or just filled it. Looks bad though. And, the seam is a super sharp edge. Not round and smooth. Just bad bodywork in my opinion.

Ok, I guess I have to be the ignorant one here, but what seam are you guys talking about? I haven't taken my paint down yet, so maybe I just haven't seen it.

Re: Roof Seam...

Roof seam- aka drip rail and/or the seam along top rear of cab roof. Check this thread out. Bowtietruck turned me on to 3M #8703. A self leveling expoy. Worked really, really well on mine!

Re: Roof Seam...

Wire wheeled out the seam seal and welded it. Did it the first or second day, april last year?

Still working on the truck, turned into a bigger project than I planned. I don't have any worries about it being a flex point; the cab is fairly rigid and I think it was just done for ease of manufacturing

It sounds to me like the po did not weld it and just filled it with poly. When you do your welding, keep a bucket of water and a rag handy to cool the roof and back panel to keep from warping, grind it smooth, add a little filler to finish it and presto, no more seam.

Re: Roof Seam...

I t's funny that the only seam I left. I kinda like the look of it. My truck was original paint and it only got one coatr of thin primer then paint so it still looks clean and not all caked up.

I would advise weldind the drip rail seams up and griding them smooth I wish I would have thought of doind that to my truck That way there is no need for the seam sealer that WILL crack in time.

Re: Roof Seam...

I saw it done in a mag. They actually cut about 2.5" on either side of the seam and replaced the whole thing with nice curved sections. Looked way better than just welding/filling it IMO. It was the same truck that had the drip rails removed and reshaped the "right" way. The article showed the process.
