High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

What would cause the high speed wiper to stop working and now the delay wiper works very seldom if at all. Most of the time it will not come on at all. Thanks This is on my '86.

Probably the wiper switch inside the steering column...

What do you mean when you say "wiper switch"? This is a tilt colum by the way. Is there something in the colum that controls this?

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

Inside the column at the base of the turnsignal arm is a switch that opperates your wipers. It's not hard to replace and you're lucky that you do have a tilt. The switch in a tilt is around $60. My 86 doesn't have tilt but does have delay wipe and the switch is almost $100.

Here's a pic of what the wiper switch looks like...

That is weard. Wonder why the tilt is cheaper. Did you have to replace yours? Do you have to go to the Chevy dealer to get one of these? Or can you just go to one of the parts stores? Really appreciate the help. Thanks

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

I wish I knew why a tilt is cheaper. I haven't replaced mine yet because I can't afford it. You can get them through either a parts store or the dealer. Glad to help...

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

Most problems with the delay (or so I have been told) are related to the control module doohickey (I hope I'm not being too technical... ). It is under the metal plate at the bottom of the dash where the column goes in. It is black plastic with an aluminum heatsink, and it is attached to the column.

I have never heard of it causing people to lose a speed when it goes bad, just the delay. Hopefully someone who has fixed that problem will speak up (my delay is not working, but both speeds do. Fixing it is low on my long list of priorities).

I can get a pic of it tomorrow if you need one.

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

If it's lost high speed and delay wipe it's more than likely the switch. My 86 has lost delay and pulse wipe. I've tried another wiper motor and control module so I know my switch is bad...

With my luck, two things would go out around the same time. Camper gave me a picure of the wiper switch and if you have a picture of the "doohickey" that would be great. Thanks guys. I just hate having to turn the wiper on and off by hand when needed. OK, I am spoiled. Slonaker, I have to admit, I did not know you new all them technical words. Only bad thing is "doohickey" describes a lot of things.

If they both went out at the same time, it probably is the switch. As I said before, I have never heard of anyone loosing a speed from a bad contoller (I might be using the wrong term, so doohickey is as good as anything ). If the problems developed separately, they could both be bad.

This is what it looks like, and it is connected to the bottom of the steering column right below the point where it passes through the dash:

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

Thanks for the picture . By the way, my daughter and husband seem to be doing just fine there in San Antonio. John told me that they have no trouble at all finding their way around town. Thanks again for the information and the pictures guys.

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

No problem, $49 is cheaper than they are here. I haven't been able to use delay or pulse wipe for some time, but I don't have over $100 to replace the switch in my 86...

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

Got the new switch and the high speed now works but the delay still does not work. But it took care of one problem but still have the other problem with my delay. So must be the control module like Sloaker said. Will not get one of them and install it.

Where did you get the module, and how much are they? I'm almost afraid to ask...

Re: High speed wiper and now the delay wiper does not work?

Did not cost me anything. I got a hold of the person on e-bay that I bought the tilt from (GMTILT). He is really a great guy to deal with. He told me that he wishes I got a hold of him on the wiper switch and he would have sent me another. I paid for the switch. I think in Chevy Duty the module was around $40 some dollars or so. But GMTILT sent me another at no cost at all. He does a great job on our tilts and he will overhaul one for around I think $65-$80 or so. He sells them for $250.00. I think you could get this from Advance or one of those places for a little cheaper. Now mine works like new.
