Paint Removal

Whats the easiest way to remove paint if its chipping off? Could I use a wirewheel on a drill or a grinder? I dont want to go to deep. The original color of the truck is white and the PO painted it silver but it looks like he used Krylon Insert Rookie Warning here: I have neved removed paint before. HAHAHAHH

Thanks in advance

Re: Paint Removal

If you want the best results then I would get it media blasted down to bare metal then have an epoxy primer coat put on the bare metal and start from their. Or use a DA sander with about 120 grit to start with and go finer from their.
Here is alink to a place I use in Sacramento. http://www.americanstrippingsacramento.com/home/

Re: Paint Removal

if you want to do it at home get a flapwheel. I would get one wider than this:

The wide green ones work really well - not sure if they're a specific grit or not, but they will strip paint in a heartbeat.

Re: Paint Removal

that Home Depot link doesn't work. the only way i found you can link correctly to their site is if you have them email you a link to a product, then you copy and paste the link from the email into a post.

as for me, i still wouldnt' spend the money on it. a flapwheel attachment is cheaper and you can get em to go on your grinder, on your drill, on your dremel, you name it, someone makes a flapwheel for it. it makes super quick work of removing paint, but it's easy on the metal. it's a lot more effective than using straight paper on a sander - it strips a lot faster and cleaner.

for paint, i have been using a flapwheel. for cleaning up my frame, i've been using an adapter for my 4.5" angle grinder that lets me use sanding discs = i i normally use 35-50 grit paper circles for frame work. i've wasted so much money at lowes and home depot with all the "quick stripping" crap out there like the black wheels that look like ramen noodles, the metal purcupine looking stripper wheels, you name it, i bought into it.

Re: Paint Removal

YOu need quite a compressor for a DA sander. Just be careful not to scratch the metal. Personally I would use the wire wheel for heavy metal parts, ie back bumpers, frames, wheels. NOT on sheet metal.
I've used a 3m disc that's a fairly new design for stripping paint. It's used with a grinder. I used on surface rust and it worked great.
Why do people sand down or screw up the original paint and put on cheap porus spray can primer that will only rust through in a matter of months?

Re: Paint Removal

hey - here's one - if the paint is already flaking, why not just take a pressure washer to it?
