Got about 13k miles on the spaced out backing plates now. I actually forgot about it, have ment to do a better job of it. I used large nuts that I had laying around to space out the plates, so there is a air gap to the outside, but I live in the Seattle area, and have been back and forth to Nevada City, CA, 3 times and in the snow, etc, no problems. Still have my old axles, and still have 6 lug fronts, so may go back. The only reason I changed is because I got a vcople of 33" tires at the junkers, and they were mounted on 5 lug wheels, so I changed axles. I put in a 200R4 since then and am back to standard sized tires. I live next door to a pull-a-part, and what is not cheap I finagle somehow, Just put electric windows in my 68.

cool deal, you got a way to get pics of that ? right now im trying to plan out how to put 1978 Big 10 2.75" wide brakes on 71 axles. Shafts are shorter for the wider brakes than the 71 shafts, so hmmm,., hopefully the 78 plates have 3/4" offset more than the 71 ones

Took a torch and cut it out used a drill press for the other holes. On the axle tube hole one side had to be cut at an angle cause the axle tube is sticking out a little causing the plate to not sit flush took a angle grinder on this and it all fit flush.
