My progres pics, finally!
Stated the bodywork on my truck to get it through its annual inspection as the rocker rust would have failed it. Front end half stripped down for access. I've also removed the remains of the back half of the exhausts and have dropped them in to a local exhaust place to have two new ones made up. Should be ready today with a bit of luck.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Never heard of a rusty rocker causing an inspection problem - that is interesting. How much rust is too much to pass your inspection?

Re: My progres pics, finally!
If theres more than surface rust (i.e. it holes when they hit it with their little plastic inspection hammer or it's already holed) within 15cm of what is considered to be a structural member such as a cab mount it'll fail. This rule is really designed around modern monocoque vehicles and doesn't really take into account older vehicles with a seperate frame, so it means regardless of the fact this rust doesn't really effect the structural integrity of the vehicle it still fails. the government over here has been tightening up and tightening up the rules with the aim of taking older vehicles off the road. Fortunately anything made pre 1972 is only tested for visible smoke rather than emissions. In the 22 years I've been driving its changed a lot, in the past I've had cars pass with exhausts patched with coke cans and two pipe clips, gaping holes in the fenders, even patches pop riveted on over holes.

Sounds like Pennsylvania. Japan was real rough on inspections too. Good luck with the clean up of the truck. I think it even looks sharp half stripped!

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Interesting. My truck would've been in the junk yard a long time ago then.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Yeah it's got a bit silly really! Just been to pick up my new exhaust bits. Two matching 2 1/2" pipes to go from the mufflers to just in front to the rear wheels, I've just got to check them for length and take them back to have the ends stretched and the 3" stainless tips welded on. These things are really heavy gauge steel so should outlast the rest of the exhaust which is a little rusty. the idea is when the front bit dies I'll maybe go to headers and a decent set of louder mufflers.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Up here we are starting to have on-the-spot inspections, and they will fail you if any rust holes are present. Guy I know has a pretty nice 71 GMC and he has a small hole in a cab corner. Now he has to fix it or the truck is illegal to drive. Lippy are you planning to keep the yellow color on your truck?

It doesn't happen alot, but just latrely they have had these get-em-off-the-road blitzes. Hope they are done for awhile.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Yep, yellow is staying for the moment as I can't afford a full repaint. We also have on the spot inspections, both forr vehicle condition and also now for emissions.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Got the rest of the sill off today and found that the bottom of the door pillar is rusted through which is a bummer as I don't have the repair panel for this bit. They do make them though so I guess I need to order a pair as like as not the other side will be goosed. $19.95 each and I'll have to spring for air freight as surface will take too long. What is the best way to make sure that this all lines up properly, any tips appreciated. Do I do the kick panel patch first and then the door pillar and then the inner rocker?
I started to dress down the old spot welds on the rear of the sill and test fitted the sill just for a giggle, not a bad fit but will need a bit of work for a good fit.. I also took my new exhausts and test fitted them so now they're all marked up to go back and have the tips welded in and the box end needs to be stretched so it fits over the box outlet.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
I like the yellow, and I am surprised the rocker backing plate is in that good a shape! Looks like other than some surface rust, your floors and rockers weren't in that bad a shape at all. Especially for a truck that was shipped over there! Usually the trip causes lots of rust. Keep us updated on your progress. Looking good! Jeff.

Re: My progres pics, finally!
Thanks, the floors gonna get a going over with a wire bursh in the angle grinder followed once the repairs are done by a coat of POR15 before the new carpets go in.
