1967 power steering question

I'm new to the world of 67's , I found out yesterday that 68-72 power steering gear boxes will not work on my 67. I surfed the internet and found that there are several companies that sell units that work, but expensive !!! are there ay other power steering boxes that will work or can you put a spacer between the gear box and the frame and have it work ???

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Rudy

Re: 1967 power steering question

Rez Engineering makes a "spacer" that will properly align and keep the Geometry when installing a p/s box. Many of the board vendors sells this as a kit..You may need to shorten the existing steering column. GMCPauls sells a kit...

I bought a new/remanuf power steering pump from a local shop for $100 for my project truck.

Re: 1967 power steering question

Does anyone have a pic of how the frame is supposed to look with the indentation? My frame has an indentation where the box actually mounts to it, and I want to make sure it is the same one you are talking about.

This is the best shot I have available right now. This is from my '67 panel
I can take better pics of my new frame if nobody else comes through....

Re: 1967 power steering question

I put a power steering gear box off of a '69 on my '67....All I did was temp. bolt it in place, marked where the indention needed to be,removed the gearbox, heated up the frame with my torch, & worked the frame over with a BFH until it fit! Everything bolted right up & works perfectly! The best part is that it cost me exactly $0.00!!!!

Yes they did, they had what it was called power assist steering, the same kind you find in the older corvettes, I scored a complete setup for 40 bucks a while ago

Re: 1967 power steering question

67's had an external ram assist set up like the old corevettes.
I would personally never get any of these spacer kits. it is not posable to get the geomitry 100% right when you move the box out.
Heat the frame rail like l1n1b1 described. That's the best way to do it.
BTW... welcome to the board from central ohio, got any pictured of your rig?

67's had "ram assist" power steering like the early vettes used. It looks like a shock and mounts to a bracket on the frame and the centerlink. Parts are pretty hard to find. I replaced my ram assist with a later box, using a little heat and a BFH. It only took a few taps.

Does anyone have a pic of an original 1967 pwr steering setup? I though the pwr steering was original on my '67 Panel...

Re: 1967 power steering question

You had to indent the frame? Ah man, screw that. Just stick a few washers in there to space the gearbox from the frame. Trust me, it's harmless and a Hell of a lot easier. Cleaner looking too if you're not a master with metal work.

Thanks for the pics guys! Mine looks like the pic John posted so either the PO had already done the BFH mod or it's not a 67 frame..... hmmmm

Re: 1967 power steering question

Spacer kit? I just put a few washers on there. The steering wheel turns, the wheels turn, no bad noises. Not trying to piss anyone off, but you don't need "100% Perfect Geometry". The steering rod has plenty of room to angle, an inch won't hurt it.
