A/C Compressor Squealin', what gives?
ok. i was charging my system, 3 cans into it before i realized that 1st can was regular r12, not oil charge (i had the system vac'd.) so, on the 3rd can, i kicked on the engine and a/c, to help get the charge in. i get god-awful hollerin' from the belt, because the compressor is only sporadically turning. i checked the vents, and the air was chillin' so i knew the compressor was compressin'.
it was only after this that i realized i had no r12 oil charge in my stash. did i screw something up real bad?

Unless the system was dry, I doubt if you hurt anything. More than likely the belt is not tight enough so it is slipping or it is old and glazed as it takes a lot to rotate the compressor.

I agree with Jim, probably just a loose belt. It takes a lot of power to turn the old A6 and if the belt is loose it will do what you are describing, especially at idle.

Re: A/C Compressor Squealin', what gives?
you might use a bit of belt dressing. The non-slip feature works fairly well.... Jim
