rat rod it or not

guys well i have tryed with out any luck to sell my old truck so i am keeping it no amount of money will make me sell it. So that said i think i am going to use it as a learning experance for my father and i. I was thinking since it is so rusty i will pull the bed and just blast the frame and repaint it. then put the bed back on and go from there. i was thinking of painting her flat black with some flat white racing stripes and red wheels. kinda a rat rod style. then through a flowmaster on it and drive it as a daily driver and as a winter beater. What do you think. also could some one paint it flat black in photo shop so i could see how it would look flat black with the red rallies?
thanks and any input would be great. if you think it will look like crap let me know maybe i can think of somthing better to do with it. or any other truck that look like it would be cool

Re: rat rod it or not

I would.
My plan for the 67 before it was hit was a 2/4 drop and a flat black paint scheme in my garage.

It was hit with the drop kit on the seat next to me on the way to my buddies shop to do it - hows that for karma

Re: rat rod it or not

If it were mine, I would repair the rust as best as possible and paint the bottom 3/4 with red oxide primer. It looks like the roof and hood have decent paint. Hit them with a light Scotch brite pad to take the sheen off, and paint it primer red from below the mirror down. Break the paint line with a single bright colored pinstripe like orange, and paint your rally wheels to match.

Get creative! Flat black primered trucks are getting pretty played out....

Re: rat rod it or not

you could try a $50.00 Roller Paint Job Scroll Down to 69chargeryeehaa's Post.

The Guy did his Charger fir $30.00 in Paint and $20.00 in materials.

He used Tremclad by Rustoleum which is available in Canada but, not in the U.S., It's a hugely popular thread which is was extended into a whole new thread, Paint job on a budget!? CONTINUED... Some of the U.S. Guys didn't have good results with the Rustoleum we get here but, other have, from what I read the guys having the problem were using the wrong thinner. Other guys have been using a paint called "Brightside" and say it works great.

Between both threads there are 70 pages of posts. I put together a little summary of doing the roller paint job here .

I am going to give it a try on a fender or a door just to see how it works out because I am interested in it. I don't want to use Rustoleum though and I think being in Florida I need a UV resistant clear coat to keep it from fading. I am going try rollering on some Zerorust on a panel, door, or fender and try hitting it with U-Pol Clear #1 Clear Coat in a rattle can (That's what a Zerorust Rep recommended) and see what I get.

Re: rat rod it or not

thanks for the pics all, i am not planning a show truck here, just a daily. i figured i could run flat black with a red and white pin stripe down the side like it had factory. Then run flat white racing style stripes down the hood roof t gate with a red pin stripe on each side to seperate it. i guess it is not really a classsic hot rod style but it should look okay when done. i also was planning to throw an edelbrock carb on the 305 and maybe run a flomaster single pipe out the back after the tire oh yeah and i am not sure if i should run red rallies or keep them flat black like they are now

It will still be flat black. You will need to clear coat it or use gloss black if you want it to shine...
