Re: Hit a snag installing rear bags... help
Cool, glad to hear you might have a solution. My SS bags have a center mount and 2 side mounts on the bottom with 2 side mounts on the top.

Re: Hit a snag installing rear bags... help
If you use the Firestone bags, with the two bolts facing up w/air fitting, drill the holes to where they are in 11 oclock to 5 oclock position as if you were looking down the frame toward the rear of the frame. By turning the bag in this fashion, it allows you to get the nuts on easier to the bolts from the top. Hope I didn't confuse.

Re: Hit a snag installing rear bags... help
Countersinking the bolt holes would seem like the best/easiest route to take in your case. There's plenty of metal there without using the c-notch as added support. You've got the factory spring plate, the frame, and the reinforcing plate on the inside of the frame to run your bolt through. I would suggest drilling the c-notch while it is off the frame though. It will make it easier to go through with your bit, especially for the 1" hole you're going to have to drill for the port.
As for ride quality, I think that Slams and Firestones ride about the same. I've ridden in identical trucks with identical setups (including shocks), 1 w/ stones, and 1 with slams and I did not notice a single difference in ride quality alone. The difference I DID notice was that the slams did get more lift. I have heard (but can't confirm) that Slams last longer. I personally like them for the internal bumpstop they offer. Hope this helps.

Re: Hit a snag installing rear bags... help
once you stack all that up, with the C notch, the studs aren't long enough to get a nut on them. I drilled out the frame portion (frame, shock crossmember & reinforcing plate) so that the nut has clearance.
The bag is bolted to the C notch only. |
