front end, etc

Man I am glad I found this forum. I have now been reading for days, and finally decided to post.

I have a 55 1st Edition that my grandpa bought new. The last time it was tagged was in '72. I rebuilt the engine in high school, class of '89 woohoo. I have worked on it off and on since then. It was a farm truck in the Texas panhandle, so its dinged up a little.

I have several questions. With this truck only being made for 6 months +/-, how rare is it? It has a single back glass, without the cab corner windows, is this common? I thought most of them had 5 windows. I wish it had the same grill as the '54's.

I traded a forklift to a guy for an IFS installed, and he used the frontend from a '72 Chevy pickup. He unbolted it from the donor, did a simple mock up, drilled the holes and bolted it on. He did have to use a 7/16" spacer on each side to take up the slack, but it appears to fit OK. Have any of you done this before?

I will be posting pictures soon, and look forward to your responses. I have found a wealth of info already.

Thanks guys.

Re: front end, etc

Hi and welcome to the board! As for how rare is a small back window, well the 5 windows was considered the "custom cab" and would be more desirable then a small window. The same holds ture with the 1955.5 to 1967 large back window cabs. The small back window was the standard cab. There are some people who rather have a small window over a large, but when it comes to which is worth more, then the 5 window or large windows have more value to them.

Welcome! As far as I know the 55 1st series should have the '54 grill. The 2 models were basically identical (from what I know anyways). Post some pics. If you have any other year specific questions you can PM me or email me at: dumphy180@hotmail.com

Welcome. I have a 75 C10 suspension in my 58 3100. I don't know about how rare it is but you may find out over at www.stovebolt.com

Re: front end, etc

I have seen one on a truck around here. The only thing I noticed was he was running ralley's and they seemed to stick out past the fenders. I remember seeing a tech article on a web site about the swap also. Can't remember which.
I did a frame swap on a 56 using a 66 frame. I like the idea of using a truck suspension rather than a car

The frame on the 55 2nd - 59 is straight 34" wide. I had to taper the frame rails to fit so I did not need spacers. Some one else that did the same swap as yours used 1/2" aluminum plate.

Re: front end, etc

Looks cool. Do you have the factory bedsides? That's another year specific part. The hood badge you have is another one. Looks like your glove box door is ruff like mine.
