Gearvendor Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was wondering if anyone could recommend, or comment on using a gearvendor type trany. My 72 LWB has the engine(402 BB) out for a complete rebuild, and the trany(400r3) is headed off for either a rebuild or to be replaced with something with an overdrive.

I know they can be a little pricey, but my concern is a transmition guy I was refered to says he's got two 55 gallon drums filled with them, and wouldn't recommend them. I want to get as much input as possible before I proceed. They definitely look like they'd save money on gas, and not rob much low end power.

there is no way he has drums full of gear vendor over/under drives.. those things are practicly indestructable.

I call BS and agree with Longhorn Man. True Gear Vendor units have no HP restrictions to them and have never heard of one failing. Pricey, yes. You might consider a 4L80 for about the same price.

Hmm I wonder why so many drag racers and land speed race cars use them??? I have one thats going to go behind a turbo400, Im still a little undecided on engine though.

Your tranny guy is full of BS. I have a GV behind my TH400 in my 72 K10 and I tow a 6100 lb travel trailer with it and have absolutely no problems. In fact I'm leaving around 3 this afternoon for 10 days in the woods. I tow the trailer using the GV and kick it off once the trailer is parked. Tell your tranny guy I will be happy to haul off all those GV units for him at no cost!

The GV unit is pricey but they work great!

offer to buy the used units as scrap and sell them, put me down for one!
the do have a round a 800 hp max though.

GV will replace one if it fails at the recomended HP TQ levels.They want to check it out so they can improve.As far as I can tell they haven't been able to improve because they haven't broken.Anyway that is my understanding.
Your tranny guy must be thinking of an OD. tranny.Maybe an early 3 speed style.

I appriciate all the feedback. I'm going into this mostly blind. This is my first time completely rebuilding any vehicle, and I want as much input as I can get. What little info I am getting, is coming second handed from my guy who is going to do the engine rebuild, and suspension. He basically only sends out tranys, and paint. He is just telling me what one of his trany guys has said. And like I mentioned, I have no clue, but assuming from the price, and the comments here, this guys in the majority.

I will call him once I get a day off and ask him directly, and make sure we are on the same page.

In the long run it might just be better to go for a newer trany thats rebuilt. If I pay $1,000 to have my 400r3 rebuilt, plus at least $2,500 for a GV, plus installation, I am really behind aren't I?

God I wish I was closer to home and tools. I can't fix a thing here.

Thanks again for any added input. All I want is the best possible freeway mileage, without turning this tank into a dud at the low end.

Start searching the wrecking yards under ALL of the trucks.I found one in Fontana for $65.00!!! And tell your trans contact if he doesnt know what he is talking about,then maybe he shouldnt do the rebuild on your engine either.!!

Anyone have a pic of what a gv looks like installed.
I get to a few yunkyards but wouldn't have a clue what I was looking for and would probably come home with something totally different

just to comment on this, Stacy from the tv show trucks put a gearvendors overdrive unit on the badass truck copperhead & it had a 600HP 572ci beog block, this truck was built with best of everything, they wouldn't have put a GV in it unless they were bullet proof.

There are pics on another thread called "overdrive"that I posted about a week ago.The tailshaft housing is for a Ford C6 but the GM housings are aavailable from GEAR VENDORS along with the couplings.
