P/S for a 67 4x4
Just bought a 67 chassis service manual, thanks warbones! As I was looking thru it there were pix of a 4X4 P/S set up. It had a control valve assembly mounted on the pitman arm side of the ? link between the steering and pitman arm. Then it had a ram that mounted on the axle to the drag link.
Anybody ever see this set up? I am sure it is rare I was going to install a P/S box on my 67 I am restoring, knowing it wasn't orginal but making it easier for me to drive. Would looking for this be a wild goose chase? Thanks, Steve |

If you aren't going for originality, I would use the p/s box.
If I know correctly, the ram steering is a leaky pita.

I agree but this has been a long term project (6 years) and i promised myself that i would do one truck as factory correct as possible. Just a thought when I saw the pix

Someone (ghetto superman I think) posted a thread today on a ram style ps setup he saw on a 68. I don't know if it would be what you're looking for.

I saw that Krue but I think it is a 2 wheel drive. I have a set up for 2 wheel but the steering box and linkage are completely different. The ram might be the same

Well, I looked and the two trucks in my sig and all the other parts I have laying around ,and I didnt have that setup but I know a guy who had a 65 GMC K10 w/ the setup.Thats what I was remembering.It had the Big GMC V6 and a 4 speed.

Not sure about 68 but the ram was the only way for PS in 67 - 2wd or 4wd. Other manufacture's also used it - Dodge. I believe Corvette used it for several years. Maybe other GM cars in the 60's. Don't limit yourself to only 67 trucks at the junkyard. Maybe even Chevy vans with the motor between the seats - don't know the year.

The yards around here are either picked out or gone. With the price of scrap the stuff doesn't sit around. My 67 has a lot of factory orginal options and I thought this would be great to add

I am pretty sure the ram style ws only available on the 2wd's. I did have a 67-68 4wd PS gear box at one time if interested, I will dig around to see if I still have it.

From what I saw in the chassis manual it is suposed to be a ram style, I would be curious about your 67-68 P/S box. I have 69-up ones but can you send me a pix?

I tried putting a '69 P/S gearbox on my late '67 Sub, it was a nightmare. The gearbox kept breaking loose and busting grade-8 1/2" bolts, it shifted the drivers side spring perch, but worst of all it changed from a tight-turner to the Queen Mary. It took 4 lanes to make a 180* turn. If you can get the ram-style slave actuators, fine. Corvette parts is where to look, but other wise stay away from shadetree P/S conversions on a '67 4x4. BTDT. Had to pay to get it back to manual, and it was still never right.

Since this is a ram assisted set-up, the box should not have any lines to it. I would think the box would be the same as the manual set-up. You would need a bracket to mount the ram and probably a center link with the extra hole for the ram if it mounts like a tie rod.

Sorry guys I must have already sold it, could not find it From what I can remember the box looked similar to the 69 up but the arm came of to the side and down. I have only ran across 2 of them in all my years of parting trucks.

that would have been the one............it might have been off of a forward control or C-40 truck. I should have never bought that manual! Too many things I have never seen are in it, like the P/S set up and a factory rear sway bar. It also showed a 67 292 A/C .

If you're less concerned with _concours d'elegance_ level vintage purity than with functional practicality, then one option would be to swap out the closed knuckle 10-bolt Corp front axle for a Dana 44 from a '69-'76 K/5. That will give you Power Steering and Disc Brake capability.
That's my plan when I intend to revive my dormant '67 K/10 Sub. I already have a D44 front core.

Not this one, I have more than enough parts to do a disc front end. This truck is going back 67 and 67 only...........except for the power if I can't find a 67 only one. i have a 68 Burb 4X4 with no dimple with a P/S box that i will use.
I didn't think/want to start this goose chase until I saw the 67 manual talking about rebuild it and having diagrams! |

I had a divorced power unit on a 67 nova wagon. They are still available from Chevy II parts suppliers. Way cheaper than Corvette parts. If I remember, the cylinder is ~$100, and the actuator is about he same. You'll also need a different pitman arm that will accept the actuator ball joint.
I would never put one on a vehicle again. The actuator depends on you moving the stearing wheel a little bit, then it adds power to the cylinder. I found that this led to real problems on the highway. Bump the wheel just a little, and you were in the next lane. If purity is what you want, stay manual. If convenience is what you want, put on an integrated power steering box. It may be that you can't have it both ways on your 4x4. my.02

That is what was done on my 68 burb..........back in the day i had a few different vehicle with the ram assist, sometimes the memories will still scare me. The 67 will probably sit in the garage after I get it done. Too much time, effort and money already to chance it! I do have a driver............Just this one truck

I know your going for original. But if you can't find the original parts and change plans. Here's a couple pics of what i did with my 67 SWB 4x4. I used a piece of another frame and welded it over the original frame. I used a 76 D44 so i got disc brake and power steering. Thanks Jason

Is this what u are talking about? I bought this several yrs ago for my 55 Nomad, Ended up going with a 605 Gearbox.................
