My tranny just went kaput!
Well, just like it says, my tranny is pretty much done for. I was stopped at a light, put it into first, slowly let the clutch out, and nothing. Put it into reverse just to see and again nothing, it was like it was in neutral. Found out that 2nd and 3rd still work just fine, at least for now. I looked under it and the lever on the tranny is moving back and forth but it must not be moving anything inside the case.
So now I am looking for another tranny if anyone knows of one. I also need to know which tranny I have, I believe it is a saginaw 3sp but being that I know less that nothing about them I am not sure. It is a 3sp, used to be on the tree, converted to the floor in my '71 C-10. If anyone could help me out this would be great being that this is my daily driver and it is pretty hard to park in Seattle for school without reverse. thanks guys. ------------------ '71 C-10 '70 Chevelle SS Seattle, WA

If it's not shifting right, it could be your shift fork is busted. You could just get a junk yard trans and use the forks out of it. might even be able to use forks out of a 4 spd. I had a trans do that to me once, was stuck in 2nd gear. found I had broken all the forks and just happened I had done it when I was in 2nd gear.

Are you saying that in a manual transmission, there are a couple of shift forks and the one that shifts for 2nd and 3rd is working? I just do not understand exactly what is inside this baby that might break. I don't want to tear into it until I need to because I still need it everyday for work and will try and do it all in one weekend. Like that'll happen.
Brad, do you mean a cheap tranny or shift fork? Either way, let me know. Thanks for the help guys. ------------------ '71 C-10 '70 Chevelle SS Seattle, WA

For ID purposes: Muncie has 2 bolts top of side cover; Saginaw has 3 bolts top of side cover; Saginaw has 7 bolts on side cover

Yes, I do mean that all that could be wrong is the little fork inside. The gears are always meshing, so if you lost a gear you would most likely (not always) lose the rest since the bad peices would get run through the others. If you drain the iol out and pop the side cover there are 3 shift forks (that might fly out at you). If one is too worn or broke, that wouldn't let you shift. If so, all you would have to do id replace that one, refill with oil and go. If you did lose some teeth or a bearing, then just get another one and swap. I am going to use a Saginaw 4 spd and am also going to have a spare just in case. I talked to a trans shop about cost on rebuild, and he told me like $150. Now I think that might be a little too low, but still way better that having a auto rebuilt. You should be able to get one pretty cheap used. Good luck

Well, I just talked to a guy who said that he thinks the only problem might be the bolt that the shifter arm is attached to could be coming out and that could cause it. He says that is pretty common and that all that I would have to do is get under there and tighten it.
The guy who I bought this truck did nothing to it except drive it for 200k miles and so he hasn't touched a thing. Hopefully I can get home and tighten this bolt and it will solve all of my problems. If only working on cars were actually that easy. I love it. More suggestions are always welcome, especially if someone wants to give me a Muncie 4sp, I sure wouldn't complain. ------------------ '71 C-10 '70 Chevelle SS Seattle, WA

Good news! The tranny is back up and running. The guy that I talked to was right, it was the bolt that held the linkage arm onto the tranny. I feel like an idiot, I didn't even check the tightness of the bolts, the very first thing that I should have checked. Oh well, at least it's working.
And thanks to Brad, this guy was willing to help me out more than I could have asked for! Great guy to have on here. Thanks for all your guy's help. ------------------ '71 C-10 '70 Chevelle SS Seattle, WA
