Can the outer grill piece be polished? Mine is okay, but looks kinda gnarly.

That grill can be polished with the right stuff depends on the shape that it's in. Eastwood sells some good product for that. Hey Paul,
I just dropped off a 70' grill for my father to be polished. I know this guy who does this kind of stuff to rims. I haven't got it back yet but I will post pics before and after.

Welcome to the board from Michigan!
The grills can be polished and can be made to look like new. Since the aluminum is anodized, once you break through the coating you will need to keep polishing or clearcoat it, (reanodizing is usually cost prohibitive). I would try a good cleaning and removing of any tar or other road grime and then hand polish. It may turn out pretty good without going through the anodizing. Any chrome cleaner appears to work well and then rinse with window cleaner to remove the polish residue. Jim
