68 K20 Dash Question
Got another question for the endless cornucopia of knowledge that is known as this forum and its members.
![]() I have a 68 K20 with the Tach and speed warning dash. It has four holes in it, and I am wondering what the correct use of the holes is. The reason I ask is that LMC pictures differ from what I have in my truck. Check out the pic and tell me if what I have is stock or been rearranged. Thanks folks. ![]()

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
On a 68 the wiper-washer knob should be where your lights are and the lights should be below that. The choke should be where your wiper-washer switch is, on the right side. At least that's how it was on my 68 c20. The choke would not work mounted on the left side - unless the cable was ran through some kind of custom pulley setup. M

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
I have a 70 C10 and my wipers are where you marked it on the picture. Maybe they moved it around and that is why there is a hole on the left side. It is just a guess but could the chock possibly belong where in the upper right corner where its marked wipers? Just a guess.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
in 69, they moved things around, headlights in the upper left, wipers in the upper right.
Before that, it was as hogrocket described. looks tome like someone found a speedwarning tach inst panel out of a 69 and installed it on your 68. (69 was the last year for speed warning) |

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
I am just curious why if choke is on left that the cable would need a custom pully set-up???

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
my 68 K-10 has four holes... Wiper upper left, lights on lower left, choke (mine was deleted with the "GM" cover plate, engine had divorced choke) on upper right, and manual throttle on lower right.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Is the "GM" coverplate you speak of, still availble from any source? I wish I didn't have the extra hole in the dash.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
On a side note, does anybody know what it takes to get the speed warning to work? I hate having a gizmo that doesn't do anything.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
You can always get a new dash bezel for a 69 up gauge cluster and that will rid you of the extra hole. As far as how to get the speed warning to work, that I don't know. I would just ignore the thing anyways

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Here is the GM plate that was covering my choke hole (that sounds weird!) I think that it was original...Only seen a few floating around though. The back piece screws from the back of the bezel.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Why were looking at your dash....whats that little box thing bolted up under the dash to the left of your steering wheel?
My truck has that, I was gonna take it off but when I unscrewed the hardline on the back of it. Ans when I did...some fluid (Im assuming) brake fluid started to leak. So I snugged it back up and walked away.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Looks like the old style trailer brake controller under the dash.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Yep that is exactly what that is, but I hope to remove it next weekend, It was causing a wierd problem (could'nt shut engine off while foot was on the brake), and it is also in the way of the parking brake.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
after reading your original post I see that I should clarify my dash in the 68. My fourth hole is under your wiper hole....that's where the manual throttle is.

Re: 68 K20 Dash Question
Feel around or take it out and look at the back of the cluster. The cluster has to have a stud which the white wire here in the picture attaches too. That stud is insulated from the cluster because that's a live powered wire when activated.
There is a fuse in that fuse holder also in the harness also. The buzzer is also connected all to that single wire harness which is needed to active the speedwarning buzzer. The buzzer is set off by the red speedo needle touching a contact point on the white needle. The white needle is adjusted to whatever speed you want it to warn you. The buzzer mounts to the firewall above the column. I have seen them on the other side of the column compared to the pic "solver" posted of the mounting position. The red thick wire of the harness connects to the fuse box. As for the plug in position in the fuse box...I've seen it in the unfused position. It has its own fuse in circuit, so it's not that much a concern. First thing I'd check would be the harness circuit and see if a buzzer is there.
