1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton vehicle ratings, respectively. There's a lot more to it than that, but that is it in a nutshell. Differences in frames and suspension. The 3/4 and 1 ton trucks usually had bigger motors, too.

You can tell a k10 (4wd 1/2 ton) from the k20/30 (4wd 3/4ton/ 1 ton) just by looking at the wheels. The 1/2 ton will have 6 lugs and the other two will have 8.
