Questions about "Z"ing

do you have to cut the floor for a 2 3/4" Z? Will the distibutor hit the firewall? Will a crossmember drop give you the same end result without the headaches?

no you shouldnt have to cut the floor, and if it an HEI distibutor it probly will hit. not sure on the crossmember mod.

Croossmember drop- at more than 1 3/8" or so you run into a whole other set of headaches.

My crossmember would not even allow for a 1 3/8" notch. It would have required grinding the lower control arm outer u-bolt nut in half.

1 1/8" was all I could notch & maintain 1/8" clearance on all steering linkage as it moved through it's arc. Every vehicle (and potential parts combo) is possibly different & should be verified.

did a 2.5 and havent hadt to cut floor yet buts its not on road might have clearance issuses later
but the hei dist fits its close and it might be tight when changing the cap

so it sounds like a Z would get a bigger drop with less headaches as long as I don't go more than 2".

Less headaches? I don't think it's fair to draw that conclusion. Yes, you can get a bigger drop... but there are certainly challenges with this method as well.

I agree. Same hassle but more drop.

The 'Z' also requires a competent weld from someone that knows what they're doing. The crossmember notch can be pulled off by a novice welder.

ran a 4" z. i didnt have an HEI dist. but didnt have problems because i used the front set of motor mount holes on the crossmember, and drilled one more hole on each side. it moved the engine ahead 3" and gave plenty of clearance. i did have to cut alot of the floor, for the 700R4.

i lowerd my motor down 2 inchs i just need to notch my crossmember to go the full 2 inchs my dizzy is in the stockish area

I started building my trans cross memeber last fri only worked on ita few hours going to try and finish it up tonight i had to cut out floor probley going to raise tunnel 3 in that will give me more than enuff clearance
if i get a chance to work on it tonight i will tryand get some pics up tomarrow
