Re: 3 speed trans, adapter and transfer case NC
Steve,
I bought a tranny to convert my K/5 from TH350 to 3 on tree. Do you know if they are the same as far as how the tranny bolts up and stuff? I'm just wondering if I may need to buy what you have to get the right set-up? Could you post or send me a couple pictures? Any more info you could give would be VERY helpful. Thanks, Mike PS Dad is aware of the 292 and willing to fit it in as soon as he can.

The way GM designed these is they made up for the transmission length differences in the adapter. The 3-speed adapter is longer then the th350 adapter because the 3-speed tranny is shorter. You'll need the whole setup out of the donor - tranny, adapter, and t-case because the input shafts to the t-case from the factory are different between straight sticks and autos. The adapter bolts to the cross member. The drive shafts are the same. Again this is with NP205s. I'm not sure about other t-cases. When I swapped I used the same cross member and driveshafts. The same transfer case mounts. The same speedo cable (it comes out of the transfer case). I did need to get a different t-case shifter pivot bolt. I got that at the parts counter at a Chevy garage. The th350/adapter/t-case in my truck are out of a Blazer. The only other stuff I needed was the th350 linkage and pivot deal on the frame. I got those off the same donor Blazer. I hope this helps with the sale.

Re: 3 speed trans, adapter and transfer case NC
So am I reading this right: The t-case will bolt to EITHER adapter, but the SPLINE count is different on the input shaft of the manual and auto? Does that apply to FOUR speed manuals ALSO? Are the adapters and spline count different on THEM too? Is there a FAQ or sticky post anywhere on the differences between them all? This is something I would like to educate myself on in detail. Thanks for the GREAT info. Steve we will have to talk shop on this one. Might be able to empty the garage a little MORE! PM sent back. Take care, Mike

I have HEARD that both the 3-speed and 4-speed inputs on the NP205 are 10-spline. I KNOW the 3-speed I took apart was 10 spline. I KNOW the TH350 is 28-spline. I have HEARD that the input on a th400's t-case is 32 spline. I would suggest putting new seals in your adapter. The seals in the adapter keep the transmission oil in the tranny and the transfer case oil in the transfer case. I would also suggest getting a new "drive sleeve". The drive sleeve couples the transmission output with the t-case input. That is not to say all used ones are bad. Just look it over real good before bolting it all together. This is one job I wouldn't want to do twice. It would be a good idea to purchase the whole shooting match from qksilver as you know that stuff all worked together at one time. You could keep the tranny you already purchased as a spare.
