Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
I'm restoring my 1971 K/5 Blazer 4 x 4 with a 4 speed transmission and I want to put a big block in it. I'm wanting to know from somebody who has done this what all was involved in doing this. I would love to see some pics if possible.
Thanks, Gary |

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
I put a 396 in mine but took it out after I realized I would have to either put on a body lift (at least 2 inches, maybe 3) or move the engine and transmission crossmembers forward. I didn't do any of those things simply because I wanted everything else to still be factory specs and moving everything around didn't afford me that.

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
Im puttin a BB in my 2wd, engine is still on the stand and waiting patiently. It is not a problem slipping these in, they just take up a little more space. Only thing is to try to get it back to the firewall as close as possible to get a little of the extra weight on to the back wheels.

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
mine has a 396 in it (bought it like that 9 days ago). It has a 3inch body lift on it to make room. The rest of the driveline is pretty much stock except for a shift kit in the TH400 and 4.88s in the differentials.

I am thinking one of the smaller 502's would be just about right for my 70 2wd!

I have a 454 with no body lift and the motor is as far back as it'll go. You just need to use a small capped distributor.

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
We installed it on the smallblock stands and mounts and had to cut holes in firewall for valve covers to clear. Just made small boxes and welded then inside cab to cover holes. Also used stock BB exhaust manifolds. Even used SB fan shourd by cutting a small amout off the side toward engine. (used 400T and NP205)

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
I have a bbc in my 69 K20. You can see info on it in this link I'm going to make some changes at some point to get the body lift down to 2".
Burt4x4 put a bbc in his K5 a while back with minimal body mods.

Re: Anybody put a Big block in 1971 Blazer?
I put one in my '72 Jimmy, but to clear the distributor and not use a body lift, I had to move the engine and transmission/transfercase crossmembers forward 3/4". Also went to a four core radiator.
I think I'm safe in saying that if you use stock valve covers and small cap distributor you wouldn't have to modify anything except the radiator shroud.
