Need help with engine pullout
I am going to be pulling the 350 out of my 68 to change out the flexplate and a few other things. Now I have never pulled an engine by myself. I am going to be renting a cherry picker and getting a old tire or 2 to sit the engine on while I work on it and the engine bay of the truck.
Beside's unhooking everything attached to the engine is there anything I need to be careful of or need to know? Is this a 1 man job or should I get some help? The grill, radiator support, drivers side fender are off. The hood will be to before I do this. Thanks

Sounds like your good to go, be carefull. are you on flat ground, that engine will get away from you real easy if your on a sloped drive. What part of San Ho are you in. Ive got a good buddy that lives off Branham and Montery that I can call if you get in a Jam. He has a nice 70Nova with an LT1, hes always looking to get his hands on a hotrod.

Im over in South San Jose. The truck is 2-3 feet from the garage. Thanks for the offer. A neighbor of mine is the same way, cant wait to get into a engine

It's definitely a one man job...depending on who you talk to. I say tear it out on your own, that way you know every little thing that came off and goes on. Some people prefer help, either way it is a very doable one man job, however, putting it back in will require a little more patience with one person but since yours is an auto it should make things easier.

i've pulled several motors by myself.
just go slow, and check everything two or three times, and it'll be over before you know it.

My .02 if this is your first engine pull ya might want to pull the distributer. I personlly always pull it and I have done many. Really easy to slip and break it
If your not sure on the timing pull the cap mark all wires mark were the rotor is pointing on the engine agood idea is to bump the engine over with the cap off to get it to a good memoarable spot (strait at back of carb for example) then pull. dont use a spot on the dist. housing as this will turn. after the engine is out replace before working on flex plate as engine will turn during this process. Right befor going back in reverse these steps. sorry if you already new this just trying to help, and save some headach if you make a slip just remember if the engine turns while the dist. is out follow steps to put the dist. back in time theresthreads on this subject here but if you can't find one just ask someone here will talk you through it myself included |

sounds like you got it but it doesnt hurt to have a buddy there just incase (learned that the hard way) but goodluck with it

If you don't pull the trans out with it. Make sure you support the front of the trans bellhousing and disconnect the flexplate to torque converter bolts. If it does not come out easy check again to make sure something is not still hooked up. A cherr picker is used to test the tensile strength of anything still connected.
