Transfer case~ hard to shift out of 4HI
My '69 K-10 is very difficult to shift out of 4-HI or 4-LO even on snow. I have to back up to get it back into 2-HI. I seems that it suffers from axle wind up very quickly. It has the same gear ratio front and rear. Am I missing something? Thanks!!!

Re: Transfer case~ hard to shift out of 4HI
On the pivot shaft of the shifter there should be a grease zerk. You may have to take it apart and clean it. I know the 205 transfers cases are set up that way but not sure on the 221's. Also if you don't shift it into 4 wd that often they get hard also

Right. That does not seem to be the problem. I shift it into 4-hi with the hubs unlocked monthly to keep the fluids circulated, however; like I said it seems to have a lot of axle wind up.????

Re: Transfer case~ hard to shift out of 4HI
My T221 has done I think once after I had driven it locked in. It also has been difficult to unlock the hubs after driving a couple times. I just have to back up about 10 feet and then it will allow me to get out of 4wd and/or unlock the hubs. Mine doesn't do it enough to worry about. You might want to throw this question out in the 4x4 forum also.

Re: Transfer case~ hard to shift out of 4HI
I had the same problem..............Even posted on the 4x4 board about it(Few may remember)..........One of my problems was the shifter, was froze to the pivot bolt.........Got it out, then drilled/tapped the handle for a grease zerk, shifted fine, but still bound up in 4Hi while using the truck. For some strange reason, after I put new warn hubs on it(Replacing the POS stockers) it cured it. I have no idea why this would have affected it, but I can shift it without a problem now. I been using the 4wd atleast 4 times daily in the last 3 weeks, locking the hubs and shifting 2 hi to 4 hi then back to 2 hi without unlocking and haven't had an issue yet.
Those Premium Warns were the best investment I've made..........I love 'em!

Re: Transfer case~ hard to shift out of 4HI
I have had this problem in alot of my trucks over the years even my 72 scout when I was a kid. What has always worked for me is when it seems hard to shift dont force it just put it in reverse and back up about twenty feet then put it in forward about five or ten then back to neutral and it should shift easily regardless of your hubs.It semms to take the pressure off, if it doesnt work just keep rockin back and fourth and it should shift with ease I have this same situation most of the time, And make sure you are still on dirt not pavement. I have a friend or two who unless im there to help them cant seem to get there trucks out of four wheel drive DUH but I can rock em back and fourth and they shift with ease ..JUST MY TWO CENTS ... Hope this helps Good luck.....
