engine build up.....

well i want to build a 400-500 hp engine for my truck. im thinking on what engine to start from. i have a 283 sittin here but i dont want to start with that. im thinking bout another 350. what do yall think? ive never built one and i want to, but while im building it i have to be able to drive my truck. so i need another engine. was also thinking of getting a 327 and putting a 283 crank in and making a 302, anybody here ever done that? let me know what ya thank.

isn't that too small of a carb to feed that big cam? comp should also tell you what would be the ideal head and carb setup to run with that cam. I would look more into using some type of kit from one of the big name brands like an edlebrock performer kit which includes cam, heads, intake. or go one up to edlebrocks torker series. 400-500hp is no simple task especially under 2000 bucks I don't think its very likely considering your stock crate motor runs 1500 and only puts out around 260hp-300ft of torque. but hey good luck!

Thats a good cam choice....the same one I went with for my engine. However, I'm not looking to get high HP, just a healthy good sounding engine. I am running an air-gap 1500RPM-up intake, 202 camels, and also a 600 carb. Unfortunatly, as mentioned before on my project thread, my 'Kragen350" that came in my truck has low compression 'smog' pistons in it . I really wanted to install new pistons, but I'm still trying to keep this a low-budget build...and I really don't have the time.

For what you want to do, you probably want to run a bigger carb., and definately spend some money on the heads.

Well...you're certainly not going to get this within a 1-2K budget! Figure $500+ for machine work alone; $750 if you're not going to do the final assembly.

It's possible to do a cheapo performance rebuild on a decent 350 core and get up above 350 HP or so...but IMHO it's not possible to get a 400+ HP build in that budget range unless you can port your own heads.

BTW, high-volume pumps are NOT DESIREABLE for SBCs if assembled with proper clearances.

thanks for all the help. ive figured out what im going to do. im going to build a 383 stroker motor. i figure if im gonna do it ill do it the way i want. im 17 and make around $250 a week, so it may take me a while but ill get it done. in the meantime i got the engine thats in my truck now running good so i have something to drive while im building the engine i want. reason i want a 383 is because ive heard they have real good bottom end torque. anyways thanks again for all the help. if you have any info i will need please let me know.

You should check with Blaine's in Dallas. They have a 383 engine that is pretty reasonable, and they will assemble the bottom end for you as well.
