Re: answer my question right now cuz I need to know!!!!

Some of these wizzards on here make 350 cid into 383 ,396, with unbeleivable HP. Read some of the threads in the Engine forum. Search around on the 67-72 forum . There are some unbelievable built engines .Especially about the 400 cid. Your friends may be correct in what they are trying to tell you.Good Luck...

I have heard that pontiacs 350 was a big block, I've seen one and its bigger than chevys 350. Not 100 % positive.

There is a 366 ci BB. I'm using the pistons in my 292 six.

Re: answer my question right now cuz I need to know!!!!

there was 348 cid BB used in the early 60's, late 50's in big trucks, and even the bigger passenger cars. Its considered a 5.7L, so that might be the confusion.

Re: answer my question right now cuz I need to know!!!!

How to classify a "big" or a "small" block is a big debate with Ford guys. With a Ford, a 289, 302, 351 Windsor, and 351 Cleveland all use the same bell housing pattern. A 351 Modified, 400, 429, and 460 all use another bell housing bolt pattern. Seems simple but then a 351C, 351M, and 400 all use the same heads! With Fords they usually classify the 289 bell housing as a "small block" and the 460 style is a "big block". With Chevys a 283, 305, and 350 is usually a "small block" and larger cubes are "big blocks". Except for the 400 small block....

Check out this link;

http://www.mortec.com/borstrok.htm

It should eliminate the confusion. The entire site makes for interesting reading.

this is the only thing that's close if we're talking Mark IV and beyond BBCs. Small bore, tall-deck - 3.935 bore x 3.76 stroke.

Re: answer my question right now cuz I need to know!!!!

Best way to prove them wrong is to get the casting number off the block and look it up at Mortec. The site also tells you where to look for the numbers. A true 350 is a small block. You can also do a visual comparison. The small block heads are visibly smaller, since the bore spacing is smaller.

One thing I've learned is to never say never, just prove them wrong. But in most cases, they won't want to listen.

the pontiacs are neither big or small block, they are all the same size. There is no 350 big block period. As close as you can get is a ford 352, and it's not a true bb, it's considered an FE series. The 348 is a w headed engine, and is neither big or small. Tell them they are full of poop.

with the introduction of the 348 in 1958----it had to be a big block.

was much bigger than the 283.

with the introduction of the 'mystery motor' in 65----we got the BBC as we know it today.
