How to Identfy Exact Model of 350 and Tranny...

Howdy all.

I've just picked up a 69 C10. LWB. Very Stock. Isn't missing much of anything. I plan on doing quite a bit of work on it and frankly have very little clue as to what I am doing. I owned the same year model as a kid, got it from my father and together we tricked it out a bit. Thing is, that was pushing 20 years ago and, for the record, it aint like riding a bike. This one has factory air although it's not in the best of shape. I could also really use a new Heater/AC control cluster as the one inside is broken a bit, althoug it looks real nice.

So, a couple of questions.

Is there a way to determine exactly which 350 I have without tearing stuff apart? I've found casting information on the web but don't find that info on the motor. The PO made it clear it was a bone stock truck (nothing's ever been done to the motor) and the Sticker inside the glove box says is a 350 and the tranny is a Turbo-Hydra-Matic (WTH?)

Anyway, I've ordered a service manual. (The real one, not a Chilton) It clearly says it's not for rebuilding the motor or tranny.Hoping to find a manual for completely rebuilding the motor and tranny. (good like eh?) Something like "Rebuilding your unidentified Chevy 350 Engine and Tranny for Dummies" book.

I'd also like to do the disc brake thing on the front. Not sure what all that intales (haven't done a search for that here yet so no need to respond if it's already on here, I will find it.)

The main questions are:

Anyone know where to find such a manual? (for rebuilding the motor and tranny)
Anyone know of a way to definitely identify which motor/tranny I have so I can start looking for the rebuild kits etc?

That should hold me over for a few days.

Great place by the way. Became a supporting member a few days back as a result of the caliber of people I've been seeing here.

No spell check though and I'm addicted to it like you wouldn't believe. Sorry if there's alot of mispeelings..

Scott

Re: Total Noob Questions Alert

Welcome from Santa Maria. Hard to say about pistons, etc. without tearing it down. The only thing you can be sure of is the number on the motor - anything can be done in 38 years. Good luck.

Re: Total Noob Questions Alert

tranny should be a turbo 350, turbo-hydra-matic is what they were called back then and for the brakes all you have to do is bolt up some 71-72 rotors and maybe spindles should be all you need but im not 100% sure or you can bolt in a 73 and up front cross member for the brakes

and call chevy at 1-800-222-1020 and order a restoration packet from them, it has alot of info in it, just have your vin number ready when you call

If you get the # of the little pad thats in front of the passenges side head. With them numbers we can tell you what you have and the horse power rating and if its factory motor. And you can check here for your trans id Here

Re: Total Noob Questions Alert

Thanks much for all the responses. I will be calling Chevy tomorrow morning to get the restore kit.

Do you know if the "Restore Kit" provides the whole step by step how to rebuild a motor?

Re: Total Noob Questions Alert

Welcome.

Disc Brakes: There is alot of infor on here regarding that. If you do a search - do an advanced search and put it something like "rotor" or a single componenet "Spindle" for the key word and my name for the post by. I know I've responed to a couple threads about that subject.

As far as the motor - all 350's are basically the same. If it is original to the truck - I would say it is either a 190 horse or 250 horse. Is it a 2bbl or a 4bbl?

You can't really order a rebuild kit until the motor is apart - so that you can see if it needs to be bored for oversize pistons or if it will need undersize bearings etc. etc.

Not to mention there is about 500 million differant options for rebuilding a SBC.

Check out the Engine and Drivetrain section here on the board - lots of good infor there too.

Welcome to the board from south Mississippi! For economy kits (once you decide what you need) check out www.northernautoparts.com

Question: Does the engine/tranny not work or is this more in the line of preventive maintenance?

Re: Total Noob Questions Alert

Well, being original the heads/valves are ticking like a clock shop. Headers and Pipers are literally rusting off the truck. From what I've found its pushing about 350k miles on what is an original motor. I did find an older timing chain gear in the back and when I asked the PO about it he said "Oh Yeah" it lost power a few years ago and we had to have the chain replaced.

So, I think it'd be best if I just did a complete rebuild.
